| You are not damn right | Any idea wtf is doing this? It happens randomly, and only since last night. I used to have this same problem when I would start 2 instances of eqw (only time it would happen) but that was over a year ago, and hasnt happened since I turned fan speed up on PS. Last night, on CS some gay tombraider map was loading for first time, and it happened. Now it happens randomly. Any ideas?

| Your graphics card is getting too hot. What you're seeing is the point at which it can still run, but it can't run properly. Any hotter and it would just shut down on you. If it's overclocked at all, turn it down. If not, look at getting better cooling through your system. |

+29 Internets | That's the on-screen effect I see when I overclock my video card too high. If it's OC'd, turn it down. If it's not, check all your computers fans and see if any of them have burned out. |

| hahaha, I'm geussing you have one of nVidia's ti 4xxx series. I had one, and it's sort-of cruel twist of fate failure is what caused me to buy a new one. I taxed the system too much by adding in another HD. So, where does the system turn first for it's "power cuts"? The video card's fan. No! Don't tell me something's wrong or shut down before any bad can happen. So, the video card no longer has any fan, it over heats, and then permanently burns out said fan, dooming itself. No future chance at cooling, it then proceeds to damage itself. Luckily the fucker was under warranty. Promply got myself a better PSU too.

| You are not damn right | I see, that would make sense that when I turned the fan up it alleviated it. I took another picture , this was world of warcraft. Guess it's time to start turning comp off overnight. I have a radeon 9700 pro, and it's not oc'd : ( just old.

| As kind of a cludgy solution you could get one of those pci slot fans and stick it right up against your video card. Have you checked to see if the fan on your vid card is even turning? BTW, turning your machine off at night won't help much as it'll heat up to "running" temp pretty quickly anyway. And it's actually harder on the board to power up and power down frequently than to just run all the time (unless you're shutting it down for days at a time). Edit: Of course, I probably just hexxed the fuck out of you as this was apparently my 666th post! Hail Satan or something! |

| You are not damn right | Ok so been experimenting a bit. I opened up the case and cleaned out a shitload of gunk from all over. Then, just for good measure, I left the side of the case off and opened the window near the computer. Still doing same thing within 10 seconds of playing WoW. Other possible diagnosis? I just updated video drivers too ;\

| point a fan at the side of the case. you need circulation. also, look at the card when the comp is on.....does the fan on the card work? If the fan doesn't work than your heatsink\fan assembly on the card itself is a liability instead of an asset in this situation. |

I used to run ATI cards exclusively. I do a lot of photo work as well as gaming and they did good for a while. Then I bought a Compaq laptop with a ATI card in it, poof! Same thing. Replaced the laptop with another. Poof! Same thing. Rinse and repeat one more time. then I got PO'd and bought a Toshiba laptop with nVidia card, never had a problem since. My 2nd and 3rd PC's also had ATI cards in them, none OC'd at all, bone stock. As newer games came out demanding more of the card, the same thing would happen as screenshots baove show. Slowly I replaced all my systems with nVidia cards and everything cleared up. I'm down to one Alienware now (ti4600) and that same 'ol Compaq laptop with the nVidia. Still banging away hard at WoW and others. Zero problems. At work here we have over 1600 PC's and laptops. The company made a change in direction from any product that would not offer nVidia. We've had waaaaaay to many problems with ATI stuff, from overheating to driver support. I'd say if you have an ATI card that's not busted and is working, leave it as is until it doesn't do it's job. Then replace it with nVidia. ... Bonz | |
