They eat anything pretty much.

Fruits, nuts and insects. When the do eat something larger in nature it's dead or dying fish.

The stories you hear about them eatting land animals is usually during dry sessions in the shoals.

The mouse could have been dead, hacked into 80 pieces, left to decay in the sun for 2 days and the pirhanas still would have eatten it. Remember, this is fish we are talking about, not snakes or something. If pirhanas passed up all the dead shit they find floating in the water they would be extinct.

Throwing in a live mouse is just being an asshole and actually puts the fish at risk.

Usually feeder goldfish are the food of choice for most piranah owners. Not at all improbable that a fish could wind up getting
its eye clawed out or somthing similar by a live thrashing mouse.

Although it was disturbing watching that mouse get diced up ,
it was a relief to finally see captive piranah feed. I worked in a
pet store once and the piranah there would flat out not feed
unless there was no one around to watch. You could stand there
for an hour watching and they wouldnt do a thing. Walk away
for 2 minutes come back and find a gold fish skeleton. Very timid
fish they were , would scurry to the other side of the tank if you
dipped your hand in.

Peacock bass ... those were bad ass fish. We had a school of
four large ones in a 200 gallon tank with a couple oscars and
a red tailed cat. Fuckers would have goldfish sticking out of
their gills before the others in the tank got a taste. Came in
one morning and found 6 inches of red tailed catfish dangling
from one of their mouths.
