Yes they are. Save the pic and open in it paint. Cut/paste chuck of the 2 squares into the white part. They are the same.

I'm missing something. I don't see how the colors on the board can go in the white/black/white/black sequence & it be possible for them to be the same color.

They are. I did the "Magic Image" eyeball stare (you know, when looking for 3d images) and they ended up being the same color when not focused on.

the shadow from the cylinder darkens it enough to match, and the surrounding squares fool the brain.

That's pretty old... it bugged the hell out of me also... I ended up cutting everything out of the picture except the two squares, and yeah, they're the same. The human brain is awesome and scary all at once!

problem is the comparison is only for those two as they are in and out of the altered portion of the picture. for example, take the darker square that occupies both the in and out. by all means take a dark piece of cloth then stick it into a shadow. unless you've got some freaky glow shit on it that cloth will not suddenly turn white.
