Reading that makes my head hurt. Part of me would enjoy having a dialog with her and debunking every ridiculous and sexist notion she has, but the other half of me realizes she'll never care. I am stunned she would actually say that women can't be sexist. That is the sheer DEFINITION of sexism: "discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex" from the 2nd definition on dictionary.com. The truly scary part is she's in college and probably has the gumption to do well too. She's going to be in a position of power someday and that makes me sad.

I'm a big believer in the idea that modern feminism servers two roles:

1) To prop up an area of Academia that would otherwise leave many people without any means of maintaining a job (seriously, "Women's Studies"? WTF).

and..

2) As part of a larger clusterfuck, specifically the expertly maintained state of class warfare in this country (blacks vs. whites, rich vs. poor, men vs. women, straight vs. gay, etc.). People in both political parties use this shit as a way of giving their constituents someone to blame, lock in votes, and keep people focused on hating each other instead of paying attention to how little those in Washington and in state governments are actually doing to make our lives better.

There will always be ignorant, retarded people who make gross generalizations about large groups of people based on limited knowledge and experience. That will never change. The problem is, now that we've gotten rid of serious, government-sponsored discrimination (at least in regards to most racial and gender-based issues), movements like feminism end up promoting resentment towards women more than anything else. Guys feel threatened by the rather ignorant and hateful rhetoric, and lots of impressionable young women (not arguing that they're impressionable because they are female) buy into the "blame men" shit and not only piss of guys everywhere but they end up with this fucked up victim mentality and don't ever face the real reasons for their problems.

If feminists really cared about equality, they would be campaigning for no separate women's sports and for no branch of the military, law enforcement, or firefighting to have separate (generally lower) standards for women.

But of course, that will never happen.

It's funny how this debate crops up right as i'm about to start writing a paper on this very subject. And i have to say, i share many of your views Glaive. Demanding equality, yet limiting the terms to those you feel your "group" is entitled to and can compete with, is forcing inclusion while broadcasting the differences. I fail to comprehend how these people can claim to be rational, all the while making declarations of their difference and pigeonholing themselves into the roles they make speeches of protest about.

I agree with everything you said except that part. Everything you listed have one thing in common: physical ability. Yes, I know there are some freaks out there, but by and large, women lack noticeably behind men in physical ability. If you hold women to the same standards, you risk very very low enrollment, almost to the point of "why bother?". It's also part of the reason why Title IX blows.

Those standards were put in place for a reason. If you can't do the job properly you shouldn't be considered.

For example, if someone is trapped in a burning house and a female firefighter finds them but is physically incapable to pull them out of the house whereas a man could have, then they died for what reason? So we could pretend to be PC?
