| Quote: Theist -- One who has a belief in a god or gods. a- -- a prefix meaning "without" atheism -- The absence of a belief in a god or gods. It is the exact opposite of theism, since it literally means "without theism." In other words, if you don't have theism, you have atheism. You can't have neither, and you cannot have both. atheist -- One who is without a belief in a god or gods. Note that this includes both individuals who positively believe there is no god, as well as those who are unaware of the concept of god, such as young children, animals, etc. Essentially, if you can't say for sure that you believe in a god or gods, then you are automatically an atheist. This brings up the uncomfortable conclusion, at least for Catholics, that unborn babies are atheists, and therefore would go to hell, at least according to their teachings. Agnosticism -- This is the belief that the nature of god is unknowable. This is NOT a third option that lets you avoid being a theist or an atheist. It is simply a statement about your belief in a particular quality of god. Agnostics must still acknowledge whether they are atheists or theists. While this is generally an attempt to avoid having to make statements about god or to declare one's atheism, it doesn't change the fact that virtually all agnostics are atheists. Atheistic Agnosticism --"The nature of god is unknowable, and therefore I can never be certain that there is or is not a god." Since this lacks a direct belief in god (aka "there IS a god"), it is a form of atheism. Theistic Agnosticism -- "I believe in a god, but the nature of that god is unknowable." This is essentially a more convoluted way of saying, "I believe in something but I don't know what it is." You might as well just shout random sounds and dance around naked. You'd make just as much sense.

| Congrats, you've used Wikipedia to reduce incredibly complicated subject matter that people have written fucktons about over the centuries into a few bite sized nuggets. Not to mention that you would be hard pressed to find people to even agree with those nuggets. Definitions like that are inherently problematic for just about every complicated concept everywhere in every field. |
