+69 Internets | this atheism thing is funny because it's exactly the same as christianity. they both start at "step 2" God can't come out of nowhere any more than the "big bang" can.

First off, atheism is not the belief that there is not god, it is a LACK OF A BELIEF in a god. See the difference? You're not necessarily making a positive statement. Theists, however, ARE making a positive declaration that their god exists. Since they're making a statement of fact, they are obligated to back that up with evidence, which is inherently impossible to do. They call that situation faith. In any other aspect of society, it's called mental illness. Secondly, The Big Bang is NOT an explanation for the creation of the universe in the theistic sense where stuff just appears out of nothingness. The Big Bang is only a "creation story" in the sense that a recipe in a cookbook shows you how flour, eggs, sugar, and other shit become a cake. The cake is "created" through a process, but that doesn't mean the cake just poofs into existence. In other words, The Big Bang is an explanation (based on evidence, novel idea, I know) of how the universe got to be in its current form. Some have theorized that our universe will eventually collapse in on itself, and perhaps this will result in another explosion which would redistribute all the matter outward again, which brings up the possibility that what we refer to as "the Big Bang" is simply one instance of a phenomena that has been reoccuring forever. Who knows? It's fairly common theistic assumption that at some point there had to be a state of nothing, where no matter or energy or whatever existed. Being that no one in recorded history has ever witnessed the creation of something from nothing, I see no reason to view this idea as having any intellectual validity, and once you dismiss that you have no reason to posit the existence of a creator, since no creation is indicated as ever having occurred.

+5 Internets | It's amazing that the 4 or so "random picture threads" I visit are all being derailed into religion debates at the same time.

I'm pretty extreme atheist, and I'd say that I don't define my paradigm as a "lack of a belief in a god." It's more of a "relative certainty that the universe is godless."

| Wow, that isn't correct *at all*, i.e. "strong" atheism vs. "weak" atheism.

I really have no term other than "atheist" for myself, I supposes "Universalist" would be good, but that's already probably taken by some cult. How about "smart?" That sums up the difference between us and "Them".

| I dislike anything without some type of data to back it up. Thus science wins. Besides - if I was religious, why would I follow something like Christianity which was only created a few hundred years ago, vs. something like Judaism or even better - Animism which has thousands upon thousands of years of history up in there! |
