It was not clear to me until well, yesterday, that Japan has vastly different age of consent laws than the US, which helps to explain some of why one tends to see younger women idealized by Japanese pornography than in the US culture, which tends to all be around that 18-19 year old sweet spot (even if the "performers" are older).

It does not really change the fact that US laws are what they are but it helps explain to me why so much of the Hentai that one sees tends to incorporate younger elements (pokemon, schoolgirl outfits, "cute" attire instead of sexy) into it - even if the "actor" being drawn is still clearly 18+. Although it does tend to blur (and cross) the line a LOT more than American anime/hentai. Like the Lolii / male version of lolli / etc.

I had not realized then that the "average" female that Japanese men lust after was closer to 14 or 16 than 18. Having not actually been to Japan nor really being an expert on Hentai or other japanese sexual preferences - can anybody say if this is accurate or not?

If so.... that is... a bit strange even for the Japanese culture. I respect other cultures very much as they are by definition - other cultures. But still. I had no idea how something that I find to be quite disturbing (illustrations of sex with US standard minors (clearly under 18)) was such a common practice in an entire country.

Or am I completely off base here and Japan and America have the same standards of 18+ only?
