They probably don't trace it back for the sole purpose of figuring out they're 1%, 2%, 7%, and 90% something else.

They trace it back because they like to know the path their family took, and where they ended up. People like to know where they came from; knowing the 5% is probably just a trivial knowledge by-product of knowing their family history.

Both parents Scottish, raised in Scotland all my life. My mum did go to Spain while pregnant though, maybe i'm 0.0000000005% Spanish? Actually scrap that, I wouldn't want to sound like another idiot trying to grasp onto some sense of heritige like a certain nation seems to do.
