| Guess I'm a little late to rebut but: walking 1 mile and running it are about the same amount of calories. Your body is not "more efficiently designed" to walk. It's designed to run just as much. Running at full clip or speed walking are the extremes of course. As for the notion that eating soup and walking 1.5 miles a day isn't much because it's what other people do normally: yes it's what THIN people do normally. A fat person following that regimen should therefore lose weight. I ate healthfully several times a day (not just some starve session) and exercised for about 30-45 minutes and over the course of a summer lost maybe 15 pounds. Again, I'm not trying to say I'm the perfect case for it. I could have done more. But for alot of people a healthy diet and moderate exercise isn't enough to just automatically melt off fat. There are 3 basic genetic body types: Mesomorph (muscular), Ectomorph (tall and thin), and Endomorph (fat or "round"). With all of these, diet and exercise alter where you lie in the spectrum but there is no way a mesomorph can ever resemble an ectomorph without quite literally starving himself. |

+4 Internets | As someone who was at one point over 275 lbs and heavily researched the subject I can tell you this. You need to eat 5-6 times a day, around 3-400 calories per meal. Eating soup isn't going to do anything except force your body into starvation mode and store fat. You lose by eating right and burning calories. It's simple math, you burn X amount, you take in less than X and try to keep muscle as you lose and accelerate the loss by working out. You need to eat often and not be hungry, it keeps your metabolism burning. Ditch all drinks except unsweetened tea and water, don't try and justify diet drinks, while they tend to be low in calories they are still packing syrups, starches, and other shit you don't need. Cardio is about the worst way to lose weight, in all honesty. You will burn more calories and get a stronger body by lifting weights. You will not build muscle while losing weight, again it's math - it takes calories to build and if you are at a deficiency from dieting and working out you cannot build, but you will retain muscle so when you do lose you're not skinny fat and misshapen. I have lost about 35bs now, and I did it by not bitching about genetics but kicking my own ass. Get to a gym, start eating right and the pounds will melt off. Walking is shit, lift weights and get started. EDIT - I will happily provide you with a great workout routine and help you plan a diet via FitDay.com. Another great resource is T-Nation and the SA/Watch & Weight forums. If you have a diagnosed thyroid problem, then ignore everything above. Last edited by egoslicer; 07-18-2007 at 09:21 AM.. |

Feeling beat at the end has absolutely nothing to do with weight loss. I have no idea what you're trying to prove here.

You will burn 3-5 times more calories lifting weights properly than walking, and it will help you retain muscle as you lose. By your own admission, walking isn't working very well for you. I'll stop derailing, but honestly if you want some advice from a fat guy who is less fat and making the change, then send me a PM. Last edited by egoslicer; 07-18-2007 at 09:43 AM..

Wind resistance, friction, diminishing returns on effort exerted versus speed gained, arms pumping, long strides, etc. To say that you burn the same amount of calories walking as you do running is just wrong.

| Last course I was on I had to run 10 km every morning then I'd be in classes or dicking around on fire ranges all day. Outside of courses, I just walk to the office and sit on my ass all day. Said walking is 4km total (1km each way) daily. Then I run 3-4km or so in the evening. While on course I was eating like a freaking ogre to barely manage to keep my weight, and the difference was really only that 6-7km running vs 4km walking. I can walk all freaking day and my body will barely feel it. Walking isn't something that push your body, that is what it is best designed for. If you honestly believe that walking and running a same distance result with the same amount of energy used it's because you never actually ran. Running makes you jump higher (both feet leave the ground, whereas walking one is always in contact with the ground) and you have to absorb the impact of each step, which stresses the muscles of pretty much the whole body, those two things make running less efficient than walking (also, if your technique is bad or if you intentionally want to use more energy, the movement of your arms will be a third factor for the inneficiency of running). +15 Internets | On a related note, I have been getting really sick of the normal food I eat, so I looked online for high calorie high protein foods, and got advice from a website intended to guide parents of chemo patients. I thought before I just wasn't very hungry anymore (I lift heavily, but recently my intensity has decreased). I got a bunch of new food that is tasty and I eat excessively now. Moral of the story: if you want to lose weight, buy a bunch of bland food and your body will not be hungry for it. ^ this isn't serious |
