In my slightly cynical and not 100% serious opionion the problem with Iraq is that the US is trying to be the good guys so badly. Maybe some members in the Bush administration should read up on Machiavelli;

It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.

I don't think there is any doubt that the US has about 0 chance of being loved, and right now the general population has a lot more to fear from insurgents in the way of reprisals against their families and themselves than from the Coalition of Good forces. Change that.

If an understanding existed that for every suicide bombing which can be attributed to one site or another (Shiite or Sunni) a madrassa used by the other side is on the receiving end of a gbu-10 then claims that the mission had been accomplished might be even less credible, but people would be a lot less willing after a while to provide sanctuary to terrorists. Tom Tancredo definitely had a point when he suggested that in retaliation to terrorist attacks on US soil Mecca be nuked.

Who cares what the public thinks, if you want to get this unwashed rabbel to behave brute force seems to be the best way. It sure as hell worked for Saddam. Bottom line, don't look at Vietnam for tactics to deal with Iraqi insurgents - consult Nazi Germany's approach to dealing with Partisan warfare.

PS: That would also quickly do away with any nonsense like Iran taking a few sailors here and there as hostages for the PR value that gives them...
