Kits with samples of different isotopes of uranium and other radioactive materials have been used in freshman/sophomore classes for years. Funny thing is in every one of those labs there is always some ignorant, ditsy bitch with your view on radiation who is afraid to handle the samples barehanded.

Your skin will shield you from the radiation fine, you can handle U-238 with your bare hands. You can hold POUNDS of the shit with no negative effects.

Thanks for proving my point that the general public doesn't know jack shit about something as fundamental as radiation and how giving your kid an educational toy on it is probably a good idea if you don't want them to grow up to be misinformed, ineffectual shitheads.

I strongly agree with your initial point Dak, the general public has taken on a strong disdain for pure science (not technology). That said to play devil's advocate a bit, the properties of Uranium don't quite fit general education physics courses. Usually thats simple mechanics, newton's laws, etc. And personally if someone asked me to explain any element I wouldn't usually go into detail about the various isotopes.

As long as you take the same precautions you would take with U-238 and not grind it up and do rails off a mirror you should be fine.
