Why is it so abusrd. From an evolutionary point of view being able to comprehend and to some degree understand the death of another of your species. Being aware that danger may be present and in the case of disease a dead body would still be very dangerous, comprehending death at some level would be very beneficial.

Almost all animals grief.

I remember I had a St. Bernard years back, that somehow knew his father past away. He suddenly became very depressed and wouldn't eat. About a day or after he started doing that we got the call that his dad died. They weren't even in the same state, but they can sense that.

A monkey are alot like us.. In fact I remember watching animal planet when they were talking about how if monkey's don't feel the love and affection and touch of another monkey of the opposite sex, they will beat each other to death. We're not that primitive, but in a lot of ways we're similar.

Aye it's mostly practiced by orthodox jews (rarely now) i think. Local DOH's are always trying to discourage this as there have been cases of rabbi's passing labial herpes to the infants genitals as the virus can be shed in the absence of visible lesions.
