I only have an 83 but I've had it for god knows how long, it still works, and I love it.

The 89 is the shit. The fact that it actually does integration etc that the earlier models don't just make life so much easier in a number of physics/math classes.

I just like the capability of the 89 to not have to do shit for actual hand work. I've never really worked with a TI above some ancient one my Dad has had for like 20 years or something...But this one is so much better. Even my PhD holding Math Teacher calls it the TI Freakin Sweet...Because it is.

Really, its amusing to see this man whose made his life out of math (the crazy asshole even made up a song for X=-b+/- square root of Bsquared minus 4AC all over 2 a)...whatever fucking foruma that is...Is ingrained in my head to the tune of pop goes the weasel, though!..Anyways, its amusing to see him sit there with this thing and go "Wow, thats fucking cool."..."Wait, did I say that out loud?" "Well, it is."...in reference to the calculator.

Any chance to get a link to see what those calculators are at all? I never even seen anything called TI-xx, would be lovely especially if they can help a bit with differential equations.

Products by Texas Instruments - US & CANADA

Texas Instruments.

The one I've been working with:TI-89 Titanium by Texas Instruments - US & CANADA

I'm 99% sure it can do differential equations, but I'm blanking on what they are. Give me an Example and I can tell you for sure.

The TI voyager 200 is only like $30 more...or was when I bought mine, alpha-numeric keypad is a life saver and well worth the extra price.

I remember in 9th grade when someone had the TI-92 keyboard-esque one, and it had a version of FF7 on it, I nearly shat myself.

And to think I got a BS in Math without owning a calculator that could do more than arithmetic. Even in Calc based Physics and Linear Algebra, it didn't require more than arithmetic. Now I did use a computer (we had class in lab) for the part of Numerical Analysis where we did computer based b_spline stuff, but only for generating examples. The theory still didn't require it.

I'll never get how all the math taught today, that somehow now requires a calculator to learn, was created hundreds of years prior to calculators even being invented.

I'm pretty sure "Calculator Based Math" remains true only in High School, as while both my senior and junior years of math required me to have a Ti-83/84, none of my college level math (calculus 2 and beyond) has even allowed me to use any kind of calculator.

Requires a calculator and is done faster and with less chance of error are two different things.

ACtually, I'm in MathII in college. Our teacher highly encourages our calculator use. His reasoning is that theres no reason not to have it in a job where the math would be required.

He teaches how to do it by hand, however, he also teaches how to do it with the calculator. I CAN do the work by hand, but why when theres a faster, more reliable method?

Oh, and calculators have existed for a LONG time. The Abacus, which is essencially a primitive calculator, was invented a long time before a lot of the math we are taught today.

Its generally reguarded as the first computer, however, a calculator IS a computer, so you see, they go hand in hand, really. A calculator is simply a specialized computer.

Thats the same thing my old college teacher said. I mean.. hell if your going to be in an office doing whatever, you might as well as have a calculator.
