Les and Bear are both badass dudes, just for different reasons. Les really puts himself in a more realistic survival situation (plane crash, snowmobile breakdown, etc) and tries to, well, survive, and just find some way back to civilization. Bear just goes to some extreme environment and eats whatever disgusting crap he can find, while doing crazy stunts, which you should never attempt in a real survival situation without a safety crew nearby (which he even says at times on the show).

If I was stuck in the wilderness and had to pick one to help me survive, I dont think it would matter really. Id probably pick Les because he seems like a pretty laid back guy, and Id rather deal with him for a week. In a fight to the death, Id probably put my money on Bear. Anyone who can pull a fish out of a stream with his bare hands and take a bite right out of it is a hardcore motherfucker.

Overall though, Les wins, because he can pronounce words like Vitamin and Glacier without sounding like a complete douchebag. It wouldnt be so bad, except Bear is ALWAYS near/on a fucking glacier and says it his way 25 times an episode.

What indoctrination? I think it really depends on the parents running the troop. Obviously you could have some crazy religious parents in charge who turn it into extended sunday school but there's really not much indoctrination in the scout manual other than respect for nature, onesself, honesty, etc. I hardly consider that indoctrination because it's the type of thing that every parent should be teaching their kid

As for that Cartoon Network reality show, I think it's actually pretty bad ass. Think how you'd be fondly reminiscing if there was a survival show geared to kids, hosted by a grizzled bad ass when you were watching Saturday morning cartoons as a kid.

Haven't seen it but as long as they don't create artificial social drama between the children and focus on the using environment rather than stupid preconceived "challenge games" for adversity it should be very win indeed.
