Those AKs are a cheap, crappy way to sight for the cannon when used for direct fire. In many older tanks you could find turret mounted machine guns with ballistics to match the cannon. In a firefight with enemy armor before the days of targeting computers and autoloaders, your first shot could be your last. If you fired the turret MG and saw hits, your cannon was automatically on target and you could take out the enemy without the need for guessing or tedious trajectory planning.

They also did this with recoiless rifles and .50 or .30. They'd fire off tracers to sight in and then start dropping their rounds on target. M40s come to mind.

It looks more like a howitzer to me. I'm not positive, but I don't believe you "sight" a howitzer. It's more like figuring out azimuth/elevation in which you hit your desired grid coordinates. Seems pretty retarded to me try and shoot something like that in any way that "sighting" would be worthwhile.
