I'd double check that if I were you. Granted my approximations could be way off but I have it as 16740 times as wide.

The equation for the volume of a sphere is simply: (4/3)(pi)(r^3). Where r is half the diameter of the sphere.

So for the case of VV Cephei, if it's say, 16,740 times as large as the sun. Then the diameter is roughly 16,740*1,390,000 kilometers. r = 1/2 this number. Plug this into the equation and you have your volume.

Or you could just take the fact that (16,740/2)^3 is 586,376,253,000 larger

i love hubble pics. perhaps they are touched up and altered, I dunno. I imagine it would all look different if we could travel the universe and look with our eyes regardless of how the pics are treated.

anyways I daydream frequently of being able to visit all these types of places. sucks I wasn't born at a time of more advanced human civilization.

Yeah, they are pretty neat. And it kind of boggles the mind when you consider the sheer scale of what's shown. Like, in that Pillars picture, I don't remember exactly offhand, but the structures you see are dozens or hundreds of light years across.

It's actually a small section of a picture of the Eagle Nebula, I believe.

http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/arc...eases/1995/44/

Quote:
Eerie, dramatic pictures from the Hubble telescope show newborn stars emerging from "eggs" — not the barnyard variety — but rather, dense, compact pockets of interstellar gas called evaporating gaseous globules (EGGs). Hubble found the "EGGs," appropriately enough, in the Eagle nebula, a nearby star-forming region 7,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Serpens.

These striking pictures resolve the EGGs at the tip of finger-like features protruding from monstrous columns of cold gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula (also called M16). The columns — dubbed "elephant trunks" — protrude from the wall of a vast cloud of molecular hydrogen, like stalagmites rising above the floor of a cavern. Inside the gaseous towers, which are light-years long, the interstellar gas is dense enough to collapse under its own weight, forming young stars that continue to grow as they accumulate more and more mass from their surroundings.
Again though, I'm pretty sure that the picture is NOT true color, and is either colored by the variations in density or proportions or something of hydrogen gas isotopes. Or maybe it's just IR or UV. Can't remember.
