+33 Internets | I grew up in the Dallas graffiti scene. When I started out I couldn't draw at all. I had 0 artistic talent and had to learn the hard way. My first set of "heroes" were all local guys. It's a shame that even with how big graff was here, almost none of it ever made it's way online. When I started out Deep Ellum was the place to go to meet people, "get up" and even actually avoid being arrested, because the "Arts Magnet" school Booker T. Washington was located there and had acquired the right to do giant works of art on a lot of the public property in that area. Especially the famous "Deep Ellum Tunnel."

+33 Internets | This created a huge art vibe in Deep Ellum and nourished the growth of the local art scene, including street and graffiti art. Early writers were almost all from Booker T and utilized this to their advantage. Before long almost all of the public property in Dallas's arts district was covered with graffiti and street art. Private businesses were also covered. For one, some of them felt it drove traffic to the area (which we now know was true) and welcomed the art, so long as it was tastefully done and of high production value. "Ozone", "Debt" and others, were early "kings" in Dallas and due to their high production standards they did a lot to build up the graffiti scene in Dallas. Which brings us to the golden age. IC Crew, the Dallas Art Expo and the set up for the downfall: Rise of the "Get up kid."

+33 Internets | The Golden Age. This is when I started Skateboarding, which quickly lead to graffiti, which lead to me meeting people who were actually good at graffiti and becoming a serious artist. Deep Ellum was EXPLODING with art. It was everywhere. Buildings were covered top to bottom with art. Public, Private, it didn't matter. The company "Ace Parking" bought up almost all of the parking lots in the area, which includes all of the walls directly attached to the land. So even if a business didn't want graffiti on the side of it's building, the parking lot company ALWAYS let us. It brought people to the area, which meant money for them. There was a HUGE abandoned bank that also had a massive wall around it. The wall was made of wood with that thick paint they use to print high-ressolution graphics for condo advertisements. Well this is a perfect buffer for street art. This was the golden age. Deep Ellum hosted a street art expo. Hundreds of graffiti artist from around the country came to visit. I still have my piece-book from this event, and literally have 100's of bombs, tags, and pieces in it. What wasn't painted before that, certainly was afterward. Businesses were hiring graffiti writers to do productions on their walls. The famed Gypsy Tea Room even hired Full Time graffiti writers to promote their weekly concerts.

+33 Internets | The End is Nigh: Get up kids. So towards the end of the golden age, Laura Miller was elected as Mayor of Dallas. She was a yuppie bitch who decided that culture should only be for the privileged. Condos went up and the art went down. The graffiti task force started documenting everything and chasing kids down and arresting them at their high schools, etc. This prompted the meteoric rise of the get-up kiddie. Especially "Rise Above" "Soler", "Sekt", the Half Dead crew, and those guys. They modernized bombing with Stencils and quick-draw characters. Sekt was the worst, I worked downtown and couldn't talk a block without seeing his signature. After Sekt was arrested the news paper said "His signatures are also common in Dallas, where more than 100 of his graffiti marks were found in a quarter-mile of Deep Ellum, said Denton police Officer Rachel Fleming" One of them painted a 100 foot long penis on a highway that said "property of Laura Miller." Another started the website "Dallaspolice.com which had nothing but pictures of graffiti on it. This was the end, a bunch of them got turned in. A long with most of the OGs. Now days Deep Ellum is DEAD. The business association down there pushed to make Graffiti illegal. They tore down the tunnels, demolished all of the "legal walls.". When the art died, surprisingly, so did the "vibe." People can easily go to the nicer part of Dallas for booze and boobs. This part of town is almost completely dead now, 10 years ago they had to block off all the streets because it was so packed. Recently Art, Skateboarding, Breaking, Punk and HipHop are making a comeback in Dallas. Due to REC shop, Yums, and other companies. It's a shame that Deep Ellum won't be a part of the revival.
