That's what windowed mode is for I'd say. I also have no problem whatsoever playing War3 (WC3= WING COMMANDER 3 FFS) on fullscreen on my 24" widescreen. Older games can have freaky performance issues, I know. But the games that do are usually not worth playing to begin with.

We are talking about older games when talking about games that don't support widescreen resolution, right? That means even a mediocre system should be running them smoothly.

Anything newer I play in 1920*1200 anyways and therefore don't have that problem at all. Sure, means I can't really play new titles on low budget machines, but then again if I had to do that I wouldn't have bought something larger than 20" to begin with.
I don't recall a single game that gave me any trouble because of the 1920*1200 native of my monitor. Heck, some ancient titles like Vampire the Masquerade : Redemption (2000 I think?) actually recognized the 1920 1200 resolution and was able to run on it.
