It's incorrect to single space after a period when using a typewriter or a fixed width font.

One is a possessive and one is a pluralization.

HTML ignores whitespace after the first one. 1 spacebar, tab or enter hit is the same as 100000 spacebar, tab or enter hits. It allows the markup writer to format his "code" to make it more readable without effecting how it looks on the screen.
