As for how homes are built... Because bricks are very heavy, and it wouldn't be feasible to put a home on stilts or pillars made of brick, or having the home itself made of brick. Since the REAL threat to homes during hurricanes on the coast is the storm surge (The wind isn't much of a threat - as if its a Cat 4 or Cat 5, no matter what your home is built with, its gonna be fucked), stilts are much more important than a house made of bricks. The storm surge of Ike was much much worse than a typical cat 2 storm surge. Also, all homes built in 1995+ in Galveston must be able to sustain at least mid-Cat 3 winds (125mph winds). I'd wager that there was little damage in Galveston was caused by winds, but instead the surge. Just look at all those Ike pictures - all of that was caused by storm surge, minus the downtown Houston picture.

| I'm curious why most of the houses are gone, and then there's a few that are completely untouched. Totally flooded obviously, but... cmon people, if a few of you can build them right, why can't all of you?

| I dont think you actually have a clue, you see the houses in those pictures (well the few that were left standing) and the ones you dont. They will be rebuilt, not at tax payer dollars but from insurance claims. Those houses on the coast there cost big bucks, and the people can afford the hurricane insurance i promise you (hell i live in corpus not on the beach and i can afford it) its not those people who are expecting FEMA to fit the bill. Its the poor people that are in actual cities with old houses and cant afford insurance, not the people who live 2 minute walk from the beach. |

| Brilliant! | Ingleside... I still remember when they were worried about Hurricane Charlie back in '99. I was sitting in my barracks room, had gone to bed at 1am after playing EQ and got woken up at 5:30 by base security telling me to get out of Dodge. This was a good three hours before they started evaccing the city so I had clear sailing up 37 to San Antonio. Knew a few guys who weren't so lucky and they said it was a parking lot by noon. Also had a few friends on ships who went through the catassing of lashing the ships in port together to ride out the storm. Then it got upgraded to Cat 4 (I think) and they abandoned the ships. Apparantly, lashing the ships together is only good up to Cat 3. Fun stuff. Last edited by Moontayle; 09-15-2008 at 02:55 PM.. |

Coastal neighborhoods are not like conventional burbs in the city. Homes pop up whenever a lot is bought. Sometimes people will buy a lot to prevent a house from covering their view of the beach, etc. They might hold that lot for 20-30 years and sell it, or whatever. Therefore, a lot of homes can come up sporadically, some built in the 60s, some 70s, some 80s, some as early as today. In my neighborhood, most of the homes are from the 90s, though there was one home that was just built last year. Mine in particular was from 1995. Quote:
Also, as for FEMA "bailing" people out - I dunno how thats going to turn out, but I don't think you're going to see a bunch of people bitching about it -- and certainly not me. Part of living on the coast is to accept the risk that comes with it when this very thing happens, and that is why we spend upwards of $10,000 a year in hurricane insurance.

Anyone that would live in a city in a bowl surrounded by lakes on the coast is an idiot, and should move. Any government that supports the rebuilding of a city that resides below sea level is just throwing money away.
