You should follow the link, but I will post the basic pics in a sec in honor of the FSR thread. Alternate starring at the green and purple lines for ~2 minutes or so then look at the black and white lines.

The mindblowing part? Look at the black and white squares 5 minutes later...or tomorrow...or next week. That's fucked up.

The trick is that your brain likes to fucking lie to you. Really, it does.

A lot of what our senses feed the brain is processed into garbage but thankfully it works out in our benefit the vast majority of the time. There really isn't much point in worrying about it anyhow as even knowing you are lying to yourself frequently doesn't really help. I've seen that picture many times of the years and I still on some basic level don't believe it.

It's not a "misinterpretation" it's just how the human visual system works. If you think of your eye cells like a CCD array, then if a small section of the grid is getting too much light compared to the cells next to it (bright spot, dark background), then Horizontal Cells will reduce the intensity of the bright spot. Similarly, if a small part of the grid has low light intensity compared to its surroundings (bright background, dark spot), then the intensity of the dark spot will be raised.

The gray squares are the same shade in the first pic.

In the second pic, the right side of the bars looks darker then the left side of the bars because of the effect of horizontal cells. But each vertical bar is a uniform shade.

People keep saying "your brain is lying to you" or "your brain is tricking you" or "your brain is misinterpreting" -- and in some cases that is correct. However your brain is doing a 100% correct job when it interprets something like square B being lighter than square A. Why? Because it knows there's a shadow there. If you had to consciously think "hey that's one of the light squares" when you looked at a board like that with shadows on it, your brain wouldn't be doing its job.
