| The point that is generically being missed is that the hammer handle and the table are both exerting an upward force. The gist of the hammer setup is that you need to sum moments around the place where the table supports the ruler. If you assume that the table is strong enough to support the ruler setup then summing forces in the vertical direction on the ruler is both trivial and meaningless. Assume that the rest of the system (other than the hammer head) is comparatively massless. Assume also that the system can freely rotate around point A. Assume also that the string is capable of tensile forces but not compressive forces. Feel free to assign numbers and solve for Fcy, Fdy, etc. Hammers of all sorts of funky shapes work out fine. Long story short, since g is constant, L3 and L4 will need to vary according to the weight of the hammer head. L1 and L2 are dependent on L3 and L4. |

| +Internets can now be exchanged for free original thought potions! | Jesus we're nerds. $5,000 worth of electronic shit in our houses and we're going to get caught fucking with a hammer and ruler for 6 hours. Someone could have posted a pic, taken 5 min earlier, of a bus full of orphans sinking into a lake, and it would have gotten like 2 responses, one of them a pedo joke. But this shit gets us going. For me this has totally replaced my last 2 obsessions: & ![]() Last edited by Salshun : 06-03-2008 at 10:16 PM. |

| The weight of the hammer head is pulling downward to counterbalance the weight of the hammer handle. The upward force generated by the hammer handle must then counterbalance the downward force of the ruler, the string, the hammer handle AND the hammer head... So the upward force of the hammer handle created by the downward force of the hammer head is holding up both the ruler AND the hammer head. There is energy being created here from somewhere. This must be harnessed for the good of humanity. In the all wood picture provided, the string holding up the hammer is AT the fulcrum, which puts the weight of the hammer AT the fulcrum, requiring the ruler to lift the hammer head in order to fall. In the original picture, the entire weight of the hammer is right of the fulcrum, meaning the hammer would fall WITH the ruler no matter the orientation. mylek's extension theory is sound as it puts the fulcrum at or to the right of the hammer. | +Internets can now be exchanged for free original thought potions! | For everyone that faked the pictures of it working, what's the website again to enter into the pool about what poster you think will try it and for how long before giving up? I also need a new score card. ![]() |
