Not to keep dragging this on, but I've been surfing around looking at other sites in the wake of the mythbusters episode and this is the most common response I'm seeing in objection to the plane taking off.

So I think I'v come to realize its not the knowledge of how a plane works, but simple reading comprehension. Here's the original question taken from that famous 500+ page science forum:

A plane is standing on runway that can move (some sort of band conveyor). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyor moves in the opposite direction. This conveyor has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyor to be exactly the same (but in opposite direction).

Please explain where it says anything about the plane remaining stationary, the plane being held down, the plane moving relative to the belt. All the confusion is implied by you, not the question.

If someone told you the question and said in the question that the plane remains stationary, then they told you the question wrong.

it's there because there are variations of religion that believe in evolution, but think "God" planned it all out. it's actually an important distinction to make. then there are just crazy religious people who oppose the idea entirely. look up intelligent design on wikipedia if you have any interest in this bullshit. i've had to write papers on it.
