The Mythbusters that airs in 2 days is doing just this, in addition to a real airplane(albeit not some airliner)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaa

fuck you for making me explain applied middle school physics. This is why these debates happen, the temptation to correct falsity is too great.
Um, I was arguing your side of the debate. Reading comprehension ftw...

This is ENTIRELY what the whole experiment is about. A runway in motion, the exact fucking same as an aircraft carrier.

This is the exact fucking same.

How you cannot see a moving runway would have this effect on a takeoff is beyond me.

If a fucking aircraft carrier was infinitely long in this example... and traveled 140mph against the direction the plane was trying to takeoff, the plane would reach 140mph while still on the aircraft carrier (treadmill, conveyor whatever), it would have an effective air speed of 0 and would not have sufficient lift to go airborn. It is that simple.
Here, let me explain with a picture:

One of these days the lightbulb is going to come on and the people arguing it won't take off will realize that the speed of the ground != the speed of the air, that thrust is not applied through the wheels, and the plane pulls itself through the air. That the only thing the treadmill is doing is spinning the wheels. That the plane can only move relative to the air, that it is designed to do this, and is fundamentally different from a car.

Or maybe they won't. I'm going to laugh my ass off if Mythbusters sets up this test properly and we see a plane taking off.

they'll probably do a good job. they know when they are in over their head too, and always bring on experts. when they were setting up the bath tub electrocution test they openly admitted they were in over their head and got an electrician to set it up correctly.

I think the key to people understanding this is that the plane still moves across the treadmill, it doesnt just sit still and magically lift up. The visual picture of a plane on a standard treadmill that people run on doesn't make sense as it would run out of treamill right away.

THANK YOU.

The plane takes off of the infinite aircraft carrier, or the mile long treadmill..

From the stationary viewpoint on the ground, the plan would appear to be going 140mph or whatever the takeoff speed is.

If you had a speedomoter attached to the wheels, it would read 280 mph.

thats like saying a car can't drive if it has a tailwind that is the same speed as the car is traveling.
