| I can't understand how that myth even got started. Planes fly by generating lift as the wings move through the air. On a treadmill, the wings don't move at all, thus no lift. Also: A pic, maybe a repost. |

| Edit: Disregard. I was under the assumption that they were simply trying to shorten the take-off. Not keep the plane completely stationary. Pic (Yeah, an old one, but it's awesome). ![]()

| It's not hard to understand. Planes pull themselves through the air, there is no thrust being put through the wheels, and to be 100% frank about it, if the plane isn't moving through the air, which is what generates lift, then it's not moving, therefore the treadmill would not move. Therefore, for the treadmill to move at all, the plane would have to be moving in space, through air, and therefore generating lift. All that would happen is the wheels would spin twice as fast, because for any given air speed, the ground underneath is moving, spinning the wheels, twice as fast as normal. That is the reality, and their test with the tiny treadmill doesn't even allow that, so I'll be waiting to see exactly how they test with the real plane. |

| Theoretically... the airplane speed relative to the track would be zero, but if they were to have one hell of a (constant) gust of wind then it would be possibly to get off of the belt. The only way for that to happen, imo, would be to borrow a carrier from the US Navy and ask if they wouldn't mind doing a test, lol. It'll never happen, but if they had the conveyor-belt-thing on the flight deck of a carrier cutting into the wind at a fairly high rate of travel then wouldn't it be possibly to provide the right velocity of air traveling over the wing? /shrug

| I'm confused about what they're actually testing. Obviously if the plane's accelerating in the opposite direction of the conveyor belt and it remains in a fixed location, nothing will happen. Are they testing that, or if you have a long enough conveyor belt doing the work and moving the plane, it will generate enough lift for takeoff? Doesn't seem very practical, even if it does work it would only save the gas fuel required for takeoff and replace it with the electricity needed to power a gigantic conveyor runway.
