| honestly I've tried several new MMORPG's when they appear, and i've been playing online RPG's for 8 years now and RPG games for 17 years. The reason games are going to have a very very hard time taking people away from EQ, especially the uber players, is simple put content. EQ has had 3-4 years to develop content, and 4 expansions. Several months into EQ the content was pretty much conquered and there really wasn't much to do, but there also wasn't another game to take you away so you kept doing stuff over and over waiting for new content. Right now people aren't going to wait long for new content, no matter how good the game is. I seriously doubt that any newcomer ORPG companies can design, implement, and balance a game and at the same time create enough content to keep people busy long enough for them to create new content and release an expansion before it's all been conquered and the masses grow bored. Earth and beyond IMO was an incredible game, tons of fun, beautiful, and having TONS of potential. However i went through the content in that game is less than a month and got bored off my ass. The reason i play online games vs single player is twofold, with the first being by and far the most important: 1. Persistance. I know that what i do today or over the next couple weeks will still have value over the next couple years. Single player games you play, finish and quit so besides the enjoyment of new stuff, there is no sense of attachment to what you have built up for your character. 2. Social aspects. With a game that runs out of content you start wondering what the point is to logging on. I like the fact that there is ALWAYS a better item for me to look forward to and thus there is always a reason to play everyday. Before kunark came out there was not a single item in the game that was better than what my cleric had, in any slot. At that point in time it was REALLY hard to logon because nothing i did from then on affected my character in anyway, there was nothing to look forward to, no new content, items, or abilities. To sum it up, until a game company can come out with a game with enough content to keep powergamers interested until they can create a new expansion and sell it, people will be sticking with everquest. Personally I'm not going to waste anymore money nor time on new ORPG's for a long time. Until someone comes out with a game with 100,000's of items, tons of spells, and TONS of things to do to keep me busy for a minimum of a year, there really is no point to even give it a try because in a couple months the newness wears off and boredom sets in cause there is nothing to look forward to. EQ currently has enough AA's to look forward to, and old content containing great items i'd like, to keep me busy for years. Even new games i've never played have even a fraction of that content, and that portion of EQ content is only a fraction of the total content EQ has. Gratzer Feen |
