I don't think Helms underwent the kind of racial awakening while in office that Byrd did. Byrd has completely turned around and even supports Obama. Plus he doesn't like dogfighting or something.

Byrd's "racial awakening" coincided very conveniently with his first seriously contested reelection campaign in decades. I trust you'll forgive me if I see more opportunism and less enlightenment in Byrd's turnaround than some do. :P

Does it matter? West Virginia is full of racist white people. Less than 5% of West Virginia is black. He doesn't give a fuck. Jesse Helms would get more out of a sudden racial awakening, considering NC's large black population, than Byrd would ever get.
