Apparently there's someone I thought was silent that is sending messages to some people to tell them about my penis. I don't recall showing off my goods to anyone mute, but there is some nights I have little to no recollection of my actions, so you never know. I hope (s)he had a good time.

I'm both honored and creeped at the same time.

Certain people like Wolfen are certainly going to rise to the top of a system like this. And sure, you don't need a rep system in place to confirm that he's popular here. I mean, the guy posts terabytes of porn on a board full of MMO gamers. Of course people here are going to like him. So his popularity is going to be reflected in the rep system. Big deal, right? It's to be expected. If you want to achieve Wolfen-like cult status, go right ahead and find your own niche to fill. The power is in your hands. Wolfen is not a moderator, an administrator, or anyone affiliated with FoH or Uberguilds in any capacity. He's been given no special treatment. What he is is a guy who discovered his niche and made a name for himself. Everyone is capable of doing the same thing; people just need to be creative and figure out how they're going to do it. You can't begrudge Wolfen his popularity any more than you can begrudge a self-made billionaire his wealth.

As for myself, sure, I have my stalkers and my fanboys. But there are also a ton of people on this board who hate my guts. My rep could probably go either way: either full of positives or full of negatives. Hell, even people who like me will give me negatives just to say they did. Especially after my silly antics yesterday. It's a jokey kind of thing.

Will rep lead to "nazi moderation" and rioting in the streets? Hardly. No one takes rep totally seriously. It's just a fun little diversion. Your rep doesn't change anything about you on these boards, other than a little ticker under your username that you can choose to laugh off or not.

Will rep cause some tensions and problems among users for the first few weeks that it's in place? Probably. I'd have to be naive to predict otherwise. But I feel that, once everyone settles in and settles down, things will quickly go back to normal. Rep will turn into more of a humorous little toy and less of a high school prom. And if the system does turn out only to cause problems, it can always be revisited or reconceptualized.
It's actually too late for me at this point as I've already amassed a good portion of negative rep. Nevermind the fact that I was down on these boards before they even became a reality after noows, as some others here are as well. Most posters now on this board joined within the last handful of years. Does that make me special? No.. But, it just shows a portion of the rep system that is flawed and only accounts for the the opinion of mindless lemmings.

When I was in 6th grade my class had an agenda. The agenda was created so that students could call out (as in a court system) those that did something that they felt was not allowed in some fashion. And, those that were deemed guilty by the the class would pay the price via suspended time, meaning you would lose all recess points until you paid it off in detention. The issues would be brought up, by a teacher in a mock-court setting with the teacher dealing with specific issues by simply asking the students to visibly show what agreed or disagreed with using hand motions. What ended up happening is that the popular people would simply trounce on those that didn't hold the same position. No matter the issue, the majority would often agree with the issue not based on merit but because of popularity. The rep system here is no different.

The rep system here is totally stupid and is really only enacted because there is little other option. Users that stand out, such as Wolfen, gain my respect without the aid of a superficial rep system. And, any users that create a niche for themselves, EXCLUDING those that are popular simply because of position held, command the respect of the community naturally. I am gaining negative reps because I am going against the decision of the popular and those negatively repping me are doing only to fit in with the lemmings that are following it.

To keep doing fake notes after you made this post kind of makes it obvious when we get one. Not that it doesn't reek of fake anyway. You're really one very special kind of stupid.

Rep given per vote should be based off the the current year minus the users join date year. I should be able to knock people down 6 notches in one hit.

I would suggest that the rep system has temporarily exacerbated the "mindless lemmings" phenomenon, but that a large portion of these boards has always acted like mindless lemmings. The rep system hasn't really changed anything; it's just brought to the forefront a particular kind of 4Chan mentality that I think has been here for quite some time, and that certainly had been asserting itself just fine without the rep system in place. We'll have to see what happens, because I certainly don't want every thread turning into "LOLOLOLOL -1 rep!" spam anymore than you do. The hope is that that sort of thing will die down over time, as the novelty of the rep system wears off. I agree with you in theory, though; I think a board that becomes obsessed with rep to the point of insanity will be a board a lot of people won't want to be a part of.

What do you mean by "there is little other option?" I am always curious to hear things like that, because if anyone has ideas on how to make the boards better and more interesting, I'm all for it. Seriously.

Frankly, I think the rep system is a little silly, but that's just the thing: I can just mentally ignore it and move on with my day. If you've amassed a bunch of negative rep, it's probably because a bunch of people are trying to be funny. It's not always appreciated, but understand that it certainly doesn't mean anything. It should have no bearing on your experience here. And one could certainly make the argument that the sheer number of rep votes you've received means that you are popular here. A lot of people have taken the time to notice your presence and, in this case, haze or sass you. You are just as well-known around the boards with 23 negatives as you are with 23 positives, for example. I think most people can just look at someone with a lot of negatives and laugh it off. The first thought that comes to mind when I see that, for instance, is "Oh. This person must have a bunch of friends here who are just giving him a hard time." I don't see "This person sucks!"

I take it you're the one who left me the "people only give you +1s because they know you and want to get in your pants" comment. And frankly, I am very sorry to hear you feel that way. :\ I would like to think I do a good job around here, and that people like me because of my community management and contributions. But if a lot of positive comments are really just about trying to get in my pants, or are done simply because of my position, that's unfortunate. I'm sure there's some of that going on, but I sincerely hope that most of the positives I'm getting are due to my actions and contributions.

Someone is seriously harboring issues from their school years. Not that I needed this post to tip me off, but you reaching for the analogy confirms it quite nicely

"I hate popularity-based systems, they make me feel bad inside "

You want a neat school story? When I was in sixth grade we had a school spelling bee between the fifth and sixth grades. Maybe it was fourth through sixth...I can't remember, there were a lot of kids for a fairly small elementary school. We had a competition in our class to see who was going to represent the class in the bee, and it went on over the course of multiple rounds on multiple days over some period like a week or two or three (it's been a while, OK?). Well, I started slow but gained ground and ended up being the ULTIMATE CHAMPION of the class, and was going to represent us in the bee. But some kids, they wanted me to step down because the guy I ended up edging out was more popular than I was. I had delegates ringing my phone at all hours with quid pro quos and various ways to try and persuade me to step down for the good of the party. BUT I PRESSED ON. And you know what? I won that bee. And I smiled, not because I thought "now I will be popular just like that other guy" but because the kids who wanted me to let him do it instead of me got to look like chumps. And then I got -84 internets, and I was sad
