Two things to keep in mind when it comes to gas:

1. the demand is very inelastic in the short term. As prices went up, the demand hasn't gone down all that much. Yeah, people change their behavior a little, but in the big picture it's not all that significant. For the price of gas that means unless your competition cuts its prices, you have no incentive to do so yourself. (after all, you know that when you drop prices, your competitors will be forced to match it - everyone ends off worse. It's different when it comes to raising prices, it's better to hold that off as long as possible.)

2. The price of gas at the pump is not as volatile as the price of oil. This is largely because companies trade in the futures market to lock-in prices far into the future. Some of the gas being refined today was actually bought 2 years ago. This helps slow down the rise of the price of gas, but it also means that even if oil got cheaper, gas would still get more expensive as the futures bought one year ago mature and so on.

I don't know if refineries still buy oil futures at the current price, but I don't think they can afford not to do it. It's a huge risk to bet that oil will be cheaper in 2 years. Just consider the impact on airlines: the ones that hedged against high oil prices pay maybe half as much for fuel as the ones who didn't.

Man, I doubt they have a form letter for a scenario like this. It's nicely written and even if someone on Obama's staff wrote it, it's a very nice gesture.

right. im not talking a short term solution here obviously. im not even sure the infrastructure would be mostly in place for something like drilling in anwar etc. but if it isnt that means more domestic jobs etc.

As I predicted, the racism from the Republican Party will reach epic levels. It is starting.

While a number of speakers -- such as Railroad Commission chairman Michael Williams and Mike Huckabee -- have praised the advance of Barack Obama and what it means towards a colorblind society, at least one vendor hasn't gotten the message.

At the Republican state convention, a booth hosted by Republicanmarket was selling a pin Saturday that says: If Obama is President will we still call it the White House.

There were other pins that weren't necessarily conveying the positive, inclusive, united front that has been portrayed during the convention. One said, "Press 1 for English. Press 2 for Deportation" and another, "I will hold my nose when I vote for McCain"

Republicans are pathetic. It will go downhill very fast as McCain drops in the polls. If you remain a Republican after what you will see you are as despicable as they are. You should at least go Independent.

A McCain aide said, "Obama is a perfect manifestation of a September 10th mind-set" and does not understand the dangers posed by U.S. adversaries.

Obama told reporters that the Republicans have no "standing to suggest that they've learned a lot of lessons from 9-11."

He said they "helped to engineer the distraction of the war in Iraq at a time when we could have pinned down the people who actually committed 9-11." He said Osama bin Laden is still at large in part because of their failed strategies.

Obama is not sitting back and taking attacks like John Kerry did. That dirty Chicago politics is kicking in.

John McCain wants to kill babies. The Dems are using underhanded Republican tactics. I love it. Not this time fuckers. John McCain's brother does not live in Florida to steal the election. Wedge issues like gay marriage will not derail this freight train that is headed your way. Character assassination will not work. Guilt by association will fall to the ground. Lie and distortions from your media outlets will be identified and pointed to on the web. What else ya got? Gotta talk about how great John McCain is. That will fail badly. At least try to mention his name once in a while.
