| MMOs as an outlet for [future] child predators? I came across something pretty disturbing this weekend. Here is a thread from the WoW Realm Forums: WoW Forums -> Abhorrent Taboo. More importantly, I would quote one message from that thread: Quote:
Quote:
What's worse is they've been doing this for a while on another realm: Ravenholdt, and an attempt to have them banned by the playerbase resulted in nothing as Blizzard apparantly cannot ban people from what's done in guildchat alone (although personally I think some stuff needs to be banned no questions asked). So this has me thinking as well: Are these games going to become an outlet for child predators or even those who fantasize about preying on a child to play out their fantasies? If so, then I think MMOs have a serious issue to contend with.

| Some people are messed up in the head, it's better for them to express themselves virtually than in the real world

+17 Internets | The problem is humanity, not MMOs. Whenever there is means of communication, the pervs, pedos, stalkers and other immoral fucktards are going to corrupt it for their own disgusting purposes. I can't imagine a communication technology that hasn't been used in this way. With that being said, while Blizzard has zero chance of preventing these people from using the game for their own sick purposes, I do hope they prevent them as far as possible from using the in-game mechanics to encourage their behaviour. Disbanding guilds expressly and openly dedicated to this kind of shit would be a decent place to start, but would really only be a palliative because just can't stop humanity from being what it is. |

+37 Internets | The sad truth is that even if you eliminated them from MMO's, that's not going to make these sort of people disappear. That's not to sugguest Blizzard and all the other companies should sit back and do nothing, but they're not really the right people to deal with the problem itself. Hopefully they're in touch with authorities about it, and the perceived lack of action on their part is due to on going investigations. I do wonder if maybe Dateline's to Catch a Predator would be interested in doing a sting on the operation though! |

| From that thread you posted: "How about this? There was someone in the guild who was a child (between ages 8 and 13) in that guild for a certain amount of time before going to another guild. Does this make a difference? By the way, this is a fact, although I won't go into names." I can see this one getting REAL ugly fast if Blizzard isn't on it like white on rice. EDIT: Nevermind that idea. Someone posted a petition in General to have those people banned and the mods locked his thread and left the one listed above open. Amazing! I guess I'll just tune into Dateline because pissing those people off is really just asking for them to go beat down Chris Hansen's door, which they've already threatened to do. +53 Internets | They're essentially using a MMO as a chatroom. That's all. It's not like 2nd Life where you can actually have your character tentacle raped. Then again, the hentai tentacles are the only reason to play 2nd life ;(

+88 Internets | On one hand, perhaps they can explore their perversion in a virtual format rather than an offline one. On the other hand, being able to freely express their perversion may lead to them wanting to commit perverted acts, and may also risk the chance of an actual child being caught in it. I say ban them, get rid of the filth of society wherever it is found. |

Truly, I wonder what this has to do with the possibility of some child predators living out their fantasies.

If you want to say that virtual depictions of illegal acts are themselves illegal, then well, there goes the video game industry. Hope you like Wii Tennis. Last edited by Mist; 09-09-2007 at 08:08 AM..
