If they got half of subs money to bank and put the other half into running costs. They'd need 4 mill/(7.5x12) = 45k subs to make it worth while. Is this achievable? It may have worked out a nice little deal for SOE. Especially if they got it cheap and even more so, if they could defy reason, logic, Newton and the laws of bad mmo's and somehow grow subs.
You're forgetting the big part where they have to make their investment back before they actually net any profits. You wouldn't just need 45k subs. For say, a 10% ROI on a 20M investment with 50% margins, you'd need 45k subs for the next six years.

It's not like the Vanguard IP is very resellable, so you can't easily divest it and get your investment basis back.

More realistic numbers imo:

MS spent $30, was going to cancel the game and write the whole thing off as a loss.

Sigil bought the rights to everything they had developed so far for less than $1.

Sigil turned around and licensed everything to SoE for $0 (no up front money). With a promised hefty percentage of all revenues later.

SoE covered development / infrastructure costs of $1. (To be taken out of Sigils cut later)

Revenues did not reach $1. Only thing of value Sigil has left is their IP. Transfered to SoE to cover initial outlay. /wave Sigil

Edit: If that stuff about Brad being mia is true I wouldn't blame him. The game has been dead since MS pulled the plug. Everything since then has been a "financial reality"

What's hilarious is reading all the posts on that silky venom shitboard and on youtube of people blaming SOE for Vanguards failure. How daft can people be?

No doubt. Sigil made the game, SOE provided the station pass.

Although I can't say I didn't see it coming, gamers are fucking idiots these days. Earlier today I read a post on gametrailers: "crysis looks cool, too bad it's going to suck because it's being developed by EA".

It's sad to think back to several years ago when I first registered at Sigil's boards and all the promise there was and to see where it's ended up. Even worse to think about all the people who are going to be put out of work because of this. Hopefully, with all the MMOGs that are in development, they won't have too hard of a time finding work, because there are definitely some quality people there.

I just hope the MMOG industry doesn't take Sigil's failings to use as an example that gamers just don't want more involved and in depth MMOGs. Sigil failed to deliver that, so it shouldn't be used as an example for an obsolete model.

We were all stupid and immature once and swore off SOE (ok maybe not all of us, but I sure as hell wasn't the only one). Eventually they'll learn it wasn't SOE after all.

I didn't say it before, but I do wish the best for those that actually put in time, effort and care for the project they worked on. The project had so much potential. Too bad it's leader was stuck in 1999.

The best thing SoE could do would be to close the game down, butcher the project and salvage all the good stuff for a new MMORPG.

SoE's (undeserved by the present dev teams) bad reputation + a sinking Vanguard with its reputation will never achieve any kind of market success no matter how much they change the game or turn it around. EQ2 was never anywhere near as bad as Vanguard, yet it (EQ2) isn't achieving anywhere near the success it deserves based on its present state.

It's all about the launch.

Oh and Cuppy, if you don't add the text in your sig, under your avatar or at the top of your blog to 'plugged in like Neo' you fail at the interweb.

It's not a victory, it's vindication. Maybe some of you fuck-faces who spent hour upon hours attacking the people who were trying to warn you that the game was shit, will next time do a little less attacking and a little more personal investigation. Or at the very least, take the information that is being offerred, store it away in your head and keep it in mind once the game is released, before you essentially light your 50 bucks on fire and throw it out the window.

It's temptin to call out several of the more venomous attackers from the last 5-7 months (some of whom are posting in this very thread), whose tunes have completely done a 180 and now, suddenly, they can "see the light". You asshole's know who you are.

At the end of the day it all down to those liars in Epic team that made Unreal Engine blabbing how great it is for any mmorpg when it actually cackz on large maps. Obsolete full of messy CC++ and too fat to read for even a transfer on an ordinary harddrive.

By the time (very soon) on next CPU generation arrive and some upgrade's -- Epic unreal engine will be obsolete already. It like buying a PS3 for the same price as a high end PC (exclude monitor) when you could cut a PC in half and you'll get a Xbox360 and PS3!.

Brad .. get your moneys back from Epic and put them on blacklist for any future mmorpg as they are full of crap.
