Its never the way you think it will be before signing up. I had a way easier time then I really should of been able to being a mischievous overconfident fool that worked in the Chaplains office, but its not the type of fun I would of imagined before I left.

I most certainly wouldnt be able to bank on being able to nintendo it up overseas so I wouldnt even consider mmo play a reason to sign up. Your life will be different and you will want to detonate your recruiter for all of his vicious lies.

No just amazed at the number of people who were getting deployed that I honestly didn't think would get to play for a year and maybe once in a blue moon beable to post on our boards. They're now on more than I could every dream at this point in my life. At some level I think it's kind of cool, but I always pictured life in the military as pretty draconian so hence the topic "The New Armed Forces".

But as I've already said, is this appealing to anyone? Or is it the least the military can do the people who put their lives on the line for us.

Admit it. You got a twofer. First you signed up, and then worse, you ended up being molested by a priest in the Chaplains office.

Poor Blaze =(

Bad Engrish aside. While most people support the military whole-heartedly, myself included. Suggesting Iraq and Afghanistan posts have anything to do with "Keeping Americans safe" is flat out wrong atm. It's certainly what they were told by the Administration, but it's not at all what they're *actually* doing there. Or did you miss the intelligence documents that were just declassified a few days ago?

And worse, you're here whoring MMO's as the selling point for joining the military. So dont pull that patriotic bullshit with us. kk thx~

Jesus rickshaw this awful thread. It's just going to turn into "BUSH LIED SOLDIERS DIED" tripe.

Anywya, I'm deploying in January for a year, and hoping like hell I'll have internet access to play ^_^ Believe it.

I played WoW Beta in Iraq .

Its doable - but

1) I'm communications so I had my *own* government issue laptop.
2) We (myself and my friend) took it upon ourselves to become very good friends with the internet cafe guy, who let us use the internet cafe after it closed every day.
3) We're shady fucks like that. 99% of the base had no clue what we were doing, and the 1% that did thought we were using it for faster download speeds on patches and Anti-virus/etc.
4) The latency was terrible - Its a satellite connection so download speeds/bandwidth are ok but the Latency is as high as 3000ms.

p.s we used IRC for operational stuff too .

P.P.S Every base has an internet cafe - but they for the most part won't allow you to install anything/hook up your own laptop to it if you brought one. Plus most if not all limit your time to maybe 15 minutes a day.

I'd only do it if they gave me gold so I didn't have to farm it.

That's next on the Bush agenda... Take over China so the populace will never have to farm gold again!

you could work in McDonald's, live in a shithole with internet access and have the same exact experience without the exertion or risk of being killed.

Now with the above in mind, would you enlist knowing that you'd be getting hazard pay (depending on rank and training can be pretty significant) and a ton of free time to play MMO"s or game in general?

Hello no, because I'm probably one of a few people on these boards who know that, to get to that point in the army, you have to go through pure hell. Oh yeah you work 8 hours a day if your in MI, but wait until you have guard duty at 2AM and you get shot because your thinking about how to get that last piece of shitty beaststalker gear to complete your set.

uh...I don't think so

What I am saying is the fact that you live somewhat of a normalized life overseas serving your country.. which doesn't necessarily mean you're on fucking patrol putting yourself in the line of fire.
They are sending new privates to somewhere other than our two war fronts these days? I have a feeling that anyone enlisting is going to be spending time on the front.

And I am hoping like hell that i'll be around when/if you get back so I can laugh at your sudden increase in sympathy to the "BUSH LIED SOLDIERS DIED" agenda.

Dude, go read my other posts in the Clinton interview thread before you make yourself sound like any more of an idiot. Been there once, and you're right, my perspective did change. Doesn't change the fact that derailing every possible thread that has the word "Iraq" in it is really god damned annoying. Especially when no one ever says anything new or interesting or insightful about it that I haven't heard a million times. Just like this little sidebar. My point wasn't that the "BUSH LIED SOLDIERS DIED" lobby is right or wrong -- just that turning every thread into a fucking shitfest because it mentions Bush or Iraq is super fucking old.

Anyway, the OP is right -- life in Iraq is, for everyone except grunts, pretty "normalized." Hot chow, air conditioning in the summer, heaters in the winter, rec centers, etc., etc. Obviously it's not America but it is pretty posh for a deployment compared to some of the places I've been. A couple of bases over there are referred to as "Camp Lejeune East". They had internet access in every two-man room over there at one particular base I didn't have the pleasure of spending much time at, but that got cancelled due to opsec concerns.

Hazard pay is about $100 so as an e-1 you will be making like 700 a month and almost garunteed to be deployed 2-3 times and not always where you want. You'd make more at wal-mart.
