+1 Internets | Its never the way you think it will be before signing up. I had a way easier time then I really should of been able to being a mischievous overconfident fool that worked in the Chaplains office, but its not the type of fun I would of imagined before I left. I most certainly wouldnt be able to bank on being able to nintendo it up overseas so I wouldnt even consider mmo play a reason to sign up. Your life will be different and you will want to detonate your recruiter for all of his vicious lies. |

But as I've already said, is this appealing to anyone? Or is it the least the military can do the people who put their lives on the line for us.

| I played WoW Beta in Iraq .Its doable - but 1) I'm communications so I had my *own* government issue laptop. 2) We (myself and my friend) took it upon ourselves to become very good friends with the internet cafe guy, who let us use the internet cafe after it closed every day. 3) We're shady fucks like that. 99% of the base had no clue what we were doing, and the 1% that did thought we were using it for faster download speeds on patches and Anti-virus/etc. 4) The latency was terrible - Its a satellite connection so download speeds/bandwidth are ok but the Latency is as high as 3000ms. p.s we used IRC for operational stuff too .P.P.S Every base has an internet cafe - but they for the most part won't allow you to install anything/hook up your own laptop to it if you brought one. Plus most if not all limit your time to maybe 15 minutes a day. Last edited by Deris; 09-29-2006 at 04:02 PM.. |

Hello no, because I'm probably one of a few people on these boards who know that, to get to that point in the army, you have to go through pure hell. Oh yeah you work 8 hours a day if your in MI, but wait until you have guard duty at 2AM and you get shot because your thinking about how to get that last piece of shitty beaststalker gear to complete your set. uh...I don't think so

Anyway, the OP is right -- life in Iraq is, for everyone except grunts, pretty "normalized." Hot chow, air conditioning in the summer, heaters in the winter, rec centers, etc., etc. Obviously it's not America but it is pretty posh for a deployment compared to some of the places I've been. A couple of bases over there are referred to as "Camp Lejeune East". They had internet access in every two-man room over there at one particular base I didn't have the pleasure of spending much time at, but that got cancelled due to opsec concerns.
