So in short, yes you were right about the previous criminal codes (sorry for not being up on my Pedo trivia). However, you still would have been charged, faced trial, and been conviced under Canadian law.

The paragraph that you need to look at is the following:

To put into summary: She has to be 18 for you to pay her, give her money for drugs, use her as an escort, take pictures of her, or generally be a fucking douchebag. You failed and would have been charged under Canadian law just as you were charged under California law.

On a side note, the law was completely antiquated. It is a relic of 1890 where life expectancy did not exceed 45 years of age (your link: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0005140.html).
