| Intel X25-M SSD Newegg.com - Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MH080G2XXX 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks Just got mine in the mail, going to hook it up and install windows 7 on it in a minute. Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions for firmware updates or anything else I should do to make it as fast as possible. Also, do i need to do anything different for it (defrag/etc)? I mean, compared to an hdd. Thanks. |

+66 Internets | You should read some of the Anandtech article to familiarize yourself a bit with how they work. Defragging is a huge no-no with solid state drives. First because it doesn't do anything, since by their nature it doesn't really matter where data is stored. Second because each page or whatever can only have so many read/write cycles before they start to malfunction. Defragging can rapidly reduce the life of the drive. As far as firmware etc, Intel had put out the new firmware for the G2 drives a week or two back, but pulled it when it was bricking people's drives. That update includes the TRIM functionality (again, see the Anandtech articles), which is pretty important for maintaining the drive's speed after use. Also, hopefully you ended up with a G2 drive. Otherwise you got fucked. Check your model number to see. Last edited by Eomer; 11-06-2009 at 02:25 PM.. |

| Still no firmware update from intel? Thought it was suppose to be re-released yesterday? Also, is it bad to run programs once in a while like ccleaner and iobit? I would think they would be fine, just wanted to make sure before I use them. |

+66 Internets | Driver cleaners no problem, I dunno what IObit is. Basically so long as it doesn't do a whole shitload of unnecessary writing and deleting of files, you'll be fine. I'm sure even if you defragged an SSD a lot it'd be fine for the typical consumer life expectancy. |
