Ebooks

While I haven't taken the plunge for an e-reeder, the appeal for me would to be able to condense all my books down to one little package. Would also love to be able to carry around 1000lbs of reference books for work. Everytime I move there are 10 boxes of just books, that all have to be unpacked, an entire wall of my bedroom dedicated to books. The bindings break, pages come out, etc etc. Would just be nice to have access to my entire library in 1 little device.

I understand books on tape, which are cool when you are driving cross country or something but an ebook I just don't get the draw of them over physical books. So what are the pros of reading a book like this? I am curious.
Personally for me, its just the way I like to read books. Usually before falling asleep, since I don't sleep on my back it's a pain in the ass to hold a book so its light enough to read without my arms getting tired or sore from awkward positioning. I will concede that the paper feel of a book is a wonderful thing, but most of mine are falling apart, ink smudges make part of them unreadable, bindings torn etc, just an easy way to avoid that

This to me would be the biggest advantage of an ebook reader. Every time I move I fucking loathe having to haul my books around, majority of which I don't ever read again. I guess I could sell them but I'm lazy like that. One thing that ebook readers lack is the ability to be able to scan quickly for book marked pages or particular sections in a book. It still takes longer to click open frustrating obtrusive chapter/bookmark menus and then click the bookmark/chapter link in a pdf file or whatever then it would take to just grab the book in your hand and thumb through it.

For me its because I am out of space for real books, 2 huge bookshelves full of books etc. That and I love the portability for trips or lunch breaks etc. Also I don't get a thumb cramp from 600page paperbacks being held open for hours.

(I have a first gen Sony PRS-500 and use it all the time to this day)

How come they have a large chunk of the screen cordoned off for the store? Seems like that could easily be accomplished via a pop up on demand, no? Giving us a lot more readable space for the 99% of the time we don't want to scroll through other books? Granted it wouldn't be color, but that seems a small price to pay for damn near 25% more screen real estate.

From what I understand, the bottom color section will change with different controls based upon what you're currently doing. It's not just for scrolling through book covers. They won't say anything at this point, but the fact that it's on the Android OS leads me to believe there are other things in planning as well.

Sadly, I can't really guarantee anything that I just said is true. I work at a Barnes & Noble store, but they gave us the information at the same time as the general public. Employees only get to see the same stuff you can see on the website. We have tons of questions and no real answers right now. We're expected to talk up the device when we haven't even seen the damn thing yet. Our store won't get a display model until it's released to the general public. It's pretty frustrating.

That being said, of all the major eBook readers (Kindle, Sony eReader, nook), the nook seems to be the best. I just can't say it's worthwhile until I can play around with one.

When you do get them in let us know how it is. I decided to wait until it officially releases so that I can see some actual reviews.

I'll probably get one, but pre-orders are sold out. Next available shipments won't be until January 4th.
