*BUMP*

Just bought a Canon EOS Rebel XS its a DSLR camera and shes taking some pretty bad ass pictures.

Here's some of what it can do. I might upload a couple whenever she gets done playing around with it.

Couple of shots. These are some pretty damn high quality nice shots using just the auto settings and built in flash.

yes one cat is missing an eye.

This was taken with a 5.0 MP Cannon powershot. If I resize it down a tad it would look even better, and looks amazing in printed photos. Camera is like 4 years old I think, point is it is pretty amazing and they come in what 10MP now?

Well +MP ≠ +image quality. Obviously there's a certain resolution necessary depending on what you're doing with the images, but it primarily comes down to the sensor. The photographer makes the photo, not the equipment. That's not to say I don't enjoy fancy gear/toys, I'm just sayin'.

You can pretty much make it a point and shoot by slapping on 50mm lens(which are pretty cheap) and keeping it on auto. Even with the packaged zoom lenses you get great pictures really easily.

Besides dude.. you live in NYC.. Shut the fuck up, go down to B&H. Its like the mecca of photography stores, people come from all over the world to that place. Its really awesome. The staff is amazing and they will help you and answer just about every question under the sun. They also have a good inventory of used stuff. Places like B&H are why people live in NYC for the first place. Fuck NewEgg.
+1 again for B&H and the D40. D70 is pretty cheap too, I bought my body for 300 more than a year ago. Gives you room in the lens department. Either is plenty even if you do decide to get into photography

my new pup, taken last week with a Pentax *istD, 6MP. Bought the camera five years ago or so...features help but compositional sense and knowing how to work good old ISO, aperture, shutter speed, focus, and light metering are what really count.

i think this is ok advice as long as you are shooting stationary things. It's been my experience that autofocus doesn't really cut it for moving subjects. For those, I turn off AF and try to predict the necessary focus.

Maybe with higher-end cameras AF is less of an issue with moving subjects.

Any pro photographer uses manual focus especially for moving objects, which is almost everything unless you have your camera on a stand and your taking a picture of scenery.

Even with the lenses I have with the ultrasonic motors in them to focus, its really easy to be out of focus, or have the camera not even take a picture do to it being on auto and it never focuses.

yeah, this happens with my pentax often enough to be annoying. quite a few missed 'perfect shots' because AF was on and couldn't make up its mind on the focus.

what lenses do you use?

Sheeit, it's not like you can't see if it's in focus from the viewfinder. AFAIK most lenses now have an A/M switch that lets you adjust by hand if you have to, at least all of my lenses have this. I'm fast because I shot manual for most of my life, but AF is really fucking fast. Try shooting a game of basketball and see how many shots you can take with manual focus.

AF on point and shoots might be rough, but I haven't had a problem with a D40, 50 or 70S. What camera bodies are you using that you're having a problem with?

Pentax *ist D...but the AF is the opposite of slow -- the AF second-guesses and corrects itself so quickly that it never settles into a focus for long enough to take the shot.

I'll see if I can limit the number of focus points or something to streamline the AF, but any suggestions would be welcome.

Since the title doesn't specify the type of camera, I am hijacking the thread.

I take photos as a hobby, but recently I have been limited by my point and shoot camera. I had some problems with the camera where it would always focus on the right side of the picture no matter what setting it is on. But that is not the only problem. I need a camera that can be consistent with the settings, so I can take two pictures that look like there were taken side to side. I love doing panoramic views and 360 views, as they make awesome content for the interwebs! The having a fisheye lens would also be awesome for those kind of shots. Also like taking night shots with long exposures.

I have no experience with anything other than a point and shoot. Should I make the jump and buy myself a 2k+ cammera? Is there any options for what I want to do? Eventually I will use the camera for work as well, as they need someone to take pictures all the time for their events. Is there any good website/book that is good for learning how to take more professional pictures? I have googled a couple of good articles, but never found a website that was good enough for general information.
