I'd been extensively looking at new HDTVs recently and narrowed it down to two:

Panasonic 54" G10 Series
Samsung 50" 650 Series

I start shopping around for the best prices and go to Sears in hopes that somebody actually has a decent in store demo set up of TVs (sidenote: Best Buy is possibly the worst place to view a TV on display). Sears didn't, but they did have a LG 60PS60 sitting out in a box on the floor. I start talking to the salesman and he says that they don't carry the model normally in store and that somebody had canceled a web order so they got stuck with it. Sears retail on the unit was $2159 and they had it on sale for $1599. He mentions a few times that they want to get rid of it cause its taking up floor space so I ask what the lowest he can go on it. Goes over, talks to his manager, comes back and says he'll sell it for $1200.

Needless to say, I now have a 60" HDTV sitting in my living room. And it was a fucking great decision. Watched the Sox game on it last night and the players were basically life size. Oh and to top it off...LGs running a $200 rebate on the unit. End price: ~$1000 for a 60" plasma. Win. I'll add a pic here in a bit.

However for more repeatable deals, if you want something bigger/already have a 360, Costco has the 54" Panasonic S1 series for $1200 out the door. Uses the same panel as the G10 which got some of the best professional reviews for 2009.

Edit: Added pics of my setup. TV is a 60" LG 60PS60, speakers are Aperions, and its being powered through an Onkyo 607. Still need to mount the center channel below the TV and hide a few wires and it'll be complete!

I couldn't be happier with mine. Ordered it from Amazon on Wednesday, It arrived 12pm friday. Amazon.com: Samsung PN58B650 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV: Electronics

Picture on it is amazing, looks great in my bedroom. Plenty of inputs for every device. I'd take a picture but my shitty iphone wouldn't do it justice

Haha that's what I was thinking too...I took the 42" Plasma I had in the living room and moved it to my 12x12 bedroom and it feels like I'm in a movie theater now. I don't think I could put anything bigger in unless I wanted an IMAX experience in my bedroom.

My bedroom is 12x15. I'd take a picture but all I have is my shitty iphone camera and it doesn't do the tv justice. Sometimes I watch the tv from 5ft away while I am at my desk. When I am in my bed I am closer to 10 feet away and it's perfect

Putting it on top the fireplace? *hits with newspaper* No, bad dog.

Seriously though, your eyes should be level to the center of the screen(top for monitors). Not like 2 feet below the bottom.

Actually, no - your eyes need to be < 15 degrees to the top of the screen. There's no where else to put the TV in the living room and sitting 12 feet back you don't look up at all really. So we went from ~25 degrees to ~30 with the new TV. Oh well.

Nothing wrong with putting over a fireplace btw. If you are implying heat issues anyways. As long as the area doesnt exceed 90 degrees over a 3 hour period, the set is perfectly fine. Lots of articles on this.

For a shitty TN monitor, yes.

For something like a plasma or an IPS LCD, enjoy from any angle son. I watch my plasma with my eyes level with the bottom bezel. My S-PVA LCD Monitor, center.

I should've also clarified that we don't actually use that fireplace.

It's not heat, ignoring angles/lines for a second, it's generally considered to be really tacky these days

It was something they did on all the design/redecorating shows when flatpanels were new, and the designers didn't put any thought to the fact that they put them in a place that made them uncomfortable to use.

Since then it's been a decorating boude.

As a recent shopper for homes, I really wondered what the fuck people were thinking with all these TV nooks above fireplaces. I am a Home Theater nut, but dont want to go so far as my own dedicated theater room. I have been looking at some otherwise fantastic looking homes, but it seems like 90%+ of them all have a living room layout centerered around the fireplace and TV nook above it, which makes setting up a large HT completely awkward and sometimes downright impossible. Most of these homes seem to be built 2004+, but it would be nice if they are stopping this rediculous trend.

Bought a Samsung LN40b630 LCD series TV for 750 at Fry's. One down, one to go. Looking for something 58 or bigger. Going to wait for some more price drops.

Plasmas rule LCDs. Basically, watch a rock concert on a plasma vs. LCD. The response time for the lights and black levels of the plasma annihilate LCDs.

Of course, plasmas have their problems too; it's just not in the picture quality category.

How I had the ps3 OR watched movies before a big hd, fucked if i know. Having this tv almost seems to make my badass stero sound better, Dunno if its cause I can just about see where the sounds come from,. But + rep on that one.
Thinking about getting this in 55", you can find them for around 1800 or so now.
the 3,000,000: 1 Ratio is nice. This will also be going on top of my fire place if I get it,
