+31 Internets | What a bunch of whiny ass children you are. How many hours did we put in on old school Nintendo games in our childhood? Everyone rushing to be an internet toughguy and judge some dude's entire life based on a 2 sentence post. Dumb. |

| Registered User | I downloaded the new channel today. I have 30 games recorded as being played. Out of those 30, there are three at 45+ hours. Wii Sports, Metroid and Zelda. Every other title is 13 hours (Smash bros) or less. Disappointing. I spent over 90 hours just on FF7 alone. |

+7 Internets | So 55 days total, over three years, divided amongst three children, and two adults. That is one and a half hours per day, total, between all five people, right? I mean I'm sure the DS makes up some time and I doubt if he owns 60 games he listed all the times, but I don't see anything wrong with kids playing video games that much. There have been a bunch of academic studies that say playing video games at a young age is one of the best things you can to help your child's literacy, there is a summary of the research on CQ Researcher if you have access to it. Not to mention the depth perception, reaction times, better surgeons, better critical thinking, etc., studies that have been done. If he's posted saying he beats his kids or something, fine, he's a bad parent. But there are a lot of hours in the day and it isn't like kids have jobs, you could easily rack up 40 hours of gaming a week and still be outside most of the day during the summer. When I was 14 I had a job, school, slept 8 hours a night, and still put in something like 50 hours a week on consoles. |

His family has: Quote:
His 8-year old (?) played over 100 hours of a single ds game in the last 4 weeks. I assume they have a decent amount of games for those 5 ds's they own and that they see some playtime. I assume they own some games for those computers. Now remember that the game list he posted was heavily slanted towards kids' games. Remember that all three of his kids are currently below 10 years, with the youngest being 5, so she was 2 when the wii was released. Remember that kids usually love to sit around and watch each other play, so each of those hours logged may often have been 3-5 people playing. All in all the circumstances suggest that his very young kids spend way the fuck more than 1.5 hours on average daily in front of video games. His 8-year old averaged 4 hours daily on a single game the last 4 weeks ffs. Sure you spent more than that on your EQ addiction when you were 16, but half of you regularly post about how it fucked up your life. You can't seriously argue that amount of gaming is healthy and normal for such young kids. I reiterate, buy them a fucking football. Stop teaching your kids that every time they have a free moment without anything they desperately have to do, they can and should play video games for the instant gratification they provide. You're raising introverted, physically underdeveloped nerds. Most people here wasted time on MMOs, but it was a conscious decision made by older teens/adults in most cases, after our parents had done their job of telling us to do healthy shit. I'd be fucking pissed if my parents raised me to be an extra in Revenge of the Nerds XXII before I was old enough to understand the consequences. Bring on the negs, you butthurt nerds. | anyone calling my 5yr old an undeveloped nerd is gonna get tackled by him, he is a linebacker in training(90% in height & weight for his age, he ain't fat, just BIG.. ya'll obviously do not have kids, while i would LIKE for the kids to go out all the time and play outside the current "fear" generation of parents-not me, just who would my kids play with NO kids in my area EVER go outside to play without a parent outside as well- prevents this, when i was 5-15, i'd get up, watch some tv eat breakfast, and at ~10am go out come back around 1 for lunch, go back outside til dinner- not a parent in sight, just a gang of kids, we'd paly baseball, we'd tromp through woods, we'd go frogging, we'd ride our bikes thru the paths and wipe out , climb up the sides of old rock quarrys, etc. all without any supervision. now a days - due to information overload about molestation, kidnapping etc, no parent lets their kids, until they are about 11, do that. even my wife is like that, if i would have my druthers, i'd kick the kids out on a sunny day and say, go play, but on a typical saturday -sunny - not one kid in my neighborhood IS outside playing-except for mine for an hr or so, then they get bored and come back inside. as for the ~60 games. i have a few out on loan but sometime in the next week i'll take a picture of the games i have, yes i have some really crappy ones, but i have almost all the quality "mature" gamer games as well. here is something to ponder about wii games: Amazon.com: Rampage: Total Destruction: Nintendo Wii: Video Games came out at release for 20 bucks....got panned in the reviews about the controls(which frankly are decent once you get used to them) and the gameplay, my kids have 60hrs playing it so far (since wii release, remember i have had the wii since december of 06) and just picked it up again to play some. it's sold over a million copies. |

+33 Internets | I take my kid to the leisure centre and we swim or play in the gyms, indoor soccer and such, or we pack up our rain gear and go for a Hike. When it's nice we do a variety of things, in the winter he's busy with Hockey. He had a DS for a while and he has a Wii but the most I'll let him play with it now is maybe an hour or so a day on the weekends, during the week he doesn't get to touch it. I had video games as a child and my parents were strict with them, and I wasn't very strict with my son about them, until summer rolled around and we ended up with incredible weather and he just sat his ass inside and played games. Fuck that. Kids don't need to play outside all of the time or whatever, but they do need to develop imaginations, it's important and while I am sure I'll be argued against, nothing develops an imagination like being stuck with a bunch of action figures and a pile of dirt outside as opposed to playing pokemon on the D.S. My son's only 8 and maybe he'll hate me asa teenager but fuck him, he'll grow up and realize it was better for him just like I did. Video games are bad for kids. Bottom line, easy to argue against if you don't have any and easy to argue against if you are too busy in your own pursuits to give up your time for your child either via work or whatever leisure activity you partake in , like video games. Here and there some rock band and what not as a family is cool but I draw the line at that, after seeing the kids at his school and watching them all sit like zombies in front of their DSes not even communicating ? Oh but they are playing together !....Not my kid man. |
