Which shooter?

I kind of feel like getting into FPS games again. It's been years since I've seriously played one. The last one was the Tactical Ops mod for Unreal Tournament.

Since then I discovered MMOs, so I've mostly just played them. Now I'm between MMOs and looking for something to play. What are some of the better games or the next big thing on the horizon? I'm looking for something that has great online play, of course. I'm certainly no good at them anymore, but I'm sure as with anything else, practice makes perfect. Thanks in advance.

edit: I should specify I'm looking for a PC title

Beyond that I'd wait for Left4Dead 2.

Thanks guys. I actually did buy modern warfare when it came out and it was good stuff. I'm looking at my disc now, but don't have my damn CD key. Gonna have to dig through boxes before I break down and buy the damn thing again to play it.

Portal is the best game released for any platform in the last 5 years, but it's short
Half-Life 2 + Episode 1 + Episode 2 offer among the best single player traditional FPS experiences ever
Team Fortress 2 may be the best online FPS for casual players ever, assuming you like the unrealistic combat

All that for what, $40? And it will always be on Steam for you to download when you reformat or shit, so you can't lose cd-keys.

Then you can decide if you want to play TF2 (if you like unrealistic combat) or CoD4 (if you like "realistic" combat).
