| Yeah, Gears 2 for me. Multiplayer is still fun, regardless of the issues. I played Gears 1 up until this past summer. Even though I was racking kills up for my Seriously achievement, I had so much fun just playing that I didn't mind doing it over and over. I feel like I'll still be playing Gears 2 years from now until the third comes out. Hopefully they fix the lag. ![]() |

+5 Internets | Gears is basically 300 in video game form. Tasteless, pointless and juvenile, but polished to hell and back, and pretty fun at the surface level. So to continue the analogy, Gears 2 getting GOTY would be like 300 winning Best Picture. Not sure about you but I'm not comfortable with that thought. Guess there's not much more to expect from the gaming community, though. |

+3 Internets | You my man are going to die of gonorrhea and burn in hell (not that I'd -internetz someone for their opinion). Much as I love L4D I have to go with Fallout 3. This year has been one of the best in my memory for gaming excellence. Tonnes of innovation as well (LBP, Mirrors Edge, Valkyria Chronicles). Hell even the second stringer B-grade games have been great this year. My wallet is bleeding out it's arse at the moment. |

I do think Fallout3 is overrated though. It has like 10% fun, and 90% boring, as far as I'm concerned. I find the maze of metro tunnels completely unfun and repeative. The combat is terrible. I don't think the questlines, or dialogue are especially great. Mass Effect was last year, but to use it as a comparison, despite its faults as well, I enjoyed Mass Effect 100% more. I'm a fan of Bioware games in this genre, and while this games graphics are good, I don't think this game is as good as most of their stuff. I can only take doing like 1 building/whatever a week before I get bored and need to play something else for a while.

+9 Internets | I'm pretty sure it will be Gears of War 2, and it's well-deserved. Gears of War 1 had all the makings of a Game of the Year, and the sequel topped everything that had been done in the first one.. it's longer, more epic, with more enemies, more actions, more weapons, more multiplayer modes, etc.. I haven't played Fallout 3, but I too have heard from fans of the franchise that it's a bit disappointing, though I'm certain a large part of that is from looking at the old ones with nostalgia goggles. Besides, if they had released Fallout 3 with the same old school graphics, people would have called them lazy, so you cannot please everyone. Mirror's Edge will definately not be Game of the Year, but if there is a nomination for originality, it may yet get that. Not that it's absolutely groundbreaking, but a parkour first person platforming game with combat system is pretty ballsy as far as niche market goes. I think the only serious concurrent for Gears of War 2 as Game of the Year may well end up being Wrath of the Lich King. As far as I've seen, it's critically acclaimed as better than the previous expansion (I agree on that) and better than other MMO's (though I haven't played any recent MMOs beside WoW and even though I know WoW is that successful mostly because they steal good ideas from other MMOs and adapt them well to their world).. Time will tell, but it should prove interesting this year. |

Gears has amazing gameplay, and just because it has a teenage boy's wet dream for a story doesn't diminish that accomplishment.

| Have yet to play it, but Persona 4 will likely top my list. I beat Gears 2 and it's fairly fun (campaign) but the matchmaking really turns me off the multi (notwithstanding horde mode, which is brilliant). I might fire up co-op tonight and if my opinion of the game requires revision thereafter, I'll amend the post. As for the games I've actually played, I'm thinking Dead Space. It was a compact, thoroughly competent little game, and I don't think it did anything terribly wrong. Fable 2, Fallout 3 and L4D are all in the queue, though, so maybe one of those will dethrone Dead Space. Then, of course, P4 will dethrone them all!!!! |

+3 Internets | Fable 2 succeeds for much the same reason WoW does in MMO-Space. It's a quite decent game that is really, really accessible. IE requires no special interests (RPG-fanatic), no special skillz (FPS-elitist) and caters to many audiences (the quintessential action+harvest moon game). It's just not GOTY territory by either a) carrying your genre to perfection (GOW, L4D, FO3) or b) being madly innovative (LDP, Mirrors Edge, Goo). |

+25 Internets | I must say I was a little surprised to see all the Fallout 3 praises, because the only feedback I had about the game came from a die-hard Fallout fan and video game connoisseur who basically said "It's a post-apocalyptic version of Oblivion: it is super lame". He was pretty early in the game though and wanted to heavily (and evilly?) play the social aspect, so he was pretty underwhelmed when getting attacked on sight by everything that moved. Note that he may have been completely off base and may have changed is mind since, but that's all I heard from him.
