| This thread made me go reinstall Planescape: Torment. No weird compatability errors so far, thankfully. I'd love to see more games like it as well as the Fallout series. The original Fallout had me so wrapped up in the game, I ended up playing it from the time I got home with it on a Friday afternoon, until I had to head in to work on Sunday night with maybe 4 hours sleep total in between. I just couldn't not finish it once I got started playing it. |

| There's a new set of PS:T fix/tweak packs that were just released this month. I'd highly recommend them, especially if you're replaying the game and have already finished it before. I installed everything from the fix pack and unfinished business mod, and just the thing to accelerate the NPC interactions in the tweak pack. Spellhold Studios - Baldur's Gate II Mods |

+40 Internets | Pretty sure he wasn't talking about games where your entire list of actions include "fight" "item" "spell" TOEE, the SSI gold box games, Wizardry, Might and Magic - where the hell have those games gone? They've all become single character RPGs with SHIT ASS quasi action gameplay. Most of the RPGs you see now are a mix of three types: Diablo style action-RPG click fests, third person hack and slash (Elder Scrolls, Gothic), and JRPG (fight/item/spell with faggoty ass children as the main characters and fucking cartoon graphics) The very closest thing to being old school is NWN2, and I only say that because you can switch the character you are controlling or even pause the game to input orders. However the balance in the game is a damn joke. You can win every battle but the last on autopilot. So, anyway, when he says turn based, I'm pretty sure he also means games that include things like positioning and cover, which rules out practically all of the console RPG's mentioned. To be fair, Wizardry and M&M are actually the predecessors to the FF style as well. So are there more obscure games out there that fit the bill? Where are the low budget tactical RPGs? |

+21 Internets | Who said they died off? There are still a ton out there and a ton being made, just cause your not a fan doesn't mean they are dead. Not enough being made for PC.

| I tried to play through BG2 again last month. Forgot all about how gay 2e monsters and abilities were when you made the game combat focused. 9 reloads and random death touches from a vampire later, I said fuck it. |

+21 Internets | haha yeah that when the anti spells come in handy. Or play a crusadar I think it was. No ranged attacks but immune to level drain and all that.

| It wasn't just the death touches though. In general, the system suffers from "too big consequences" in every combat round, and encourages cheating (as in repeated saves/loads) in a big way. Unlucky crits took out your frontliners, reload. Heals interrupted, reload. Archers saw your caster and killed him, reload. Death touch, reload. Monster spawn on rest after a tough battle, reload. The system just isn't made for the faster paced computer combat and lack of a DM that can adapt to the situation (trivial - add monsters/spawns/rolls. hard - chill out). Has anyone actually ever played through BG2 without using saves/loads more than it feels natural? The later implementations of resurrecting dead party members after combat and the general 3e changes may have been further from DnD roots, but it made for far better computer combat play. <3 the story in the 2e games though. |

Just gotta take into account what you're gonna be fighting and prepare proper spells/items for the encounters. If you just rush into every battle blind you're gonna die no doubt ;0

X-Com UFO ! Chaos Gate ! HOMM3 ! Baldurs ! NWN Master of Orion was "remade" by Stardock with Galactic Civilisations. There is no reason for a small company not to remake a cool UFO game. Not every gamer out there is a hyperactive ADHD 13 year old who wishes to Mortal Strike on a generic 5 year old pseudo-MMO. I remember very fondly of hundreds of hours spend on Chaos Gate... 47 action points = 7x2 to move 7 squares + 2 to duck + 15x2 to stand watch & aim with Heavy Bolter.
