+2 Internets | Yeah, Ultima usually started off (for me anyway) with trying to get to Skara Brae as fast as possible to pick up Shamino (I think?) and Minoc for (Tristan? maybe Dupre? Damn I can't remember all the names now) and wherever Iolo was hanging out (usually Britain I think?). And getting annoyed when they weren't there ![]() Seriously, I know a lot of these games would suck nowadays, and I'm fine with them living in my memories, but I'm honestly quite sick of the whole Oblivion-style single player games, and the NWN-style "quest until you find people to team up with you" and such. Granted, Witcher is pretty sweet. But it is a rarity, as opposed to a time when I *knew* that every single Might & Magic, Bard's Tale, Wizardry, TSR-Gold Box, etc. game was going to be at least worth playing, if not absolutely fantastic. I actually think that the advent of fancy graphics has really fucked things up a lot. Sorry for waxing so nostalgic repeatedly. I don't mean to, but I can't remember the last game that really recaptured the feel of those games for me. Probably Wizardry 8, which was what, like 2000? Even Witcher leaves me feeling lacking because it is just one character. Hell, in the couple of battles I played in Fantasy Wars last night I was already trying to spread some xp out amongst my units because I wanted them all to level up, as if they were "party members." Maybe some game developer will read this and get a clue. |

UFO: AM > HQ UFO:Aftershock UFO: Afterlight – Official website UFO:EXTRATERRESTRIALS - tactical and RPG Ufo styled strategy game And "good strategy/rpg games" like HOMM became shittier. As for NWN, we will never see another one, as its way easier to develop a MMO/FPS. Only Stardock keeps making good Master of Orion clones. The "Pen & Paper + RISK" generation is dead, thats us.

| Speaking of Planescape, I installed it yesterday and it constantly crashes, runs super choppy, transparency is all fucked up. nVidia 8800gt and windows XP and it runs worse than it did on my radeon 9000 and athlon 850 mhz. There a patch out there or something that fixes it for new systems? Does DosBox help?

It is indeed buggy as shit but you can find patches to correct that. And some good mods (like more voice sound and Yuki skin if like me you can't play anything but one of these cute deadly insane ninja Malkavian). But reaaly it is more like a Deus ex than an old school RPG. Planescape torment + patch works flawlessly on my PC (xp). I doubt that you can nowdays makes a RPG like M&M3 was. So huge and getting months of play from it. Would take 20 DvD to install ![]() Last edited by Bloodget : 05-11-2008 at 06:30 AM.

It worked perfectly on my laptop when I was playing on that a few months ago, which is pretty new and widescreen (read that widescreen could cause problems).

+2 Internets | While this thread isn't specifically about Fantasy Wars, I didn't think the game really deserved its own thread either, so I'm just going to ask here if anyone else is really playing it much. I played a few missions through, then realized I had made some pretty dumb decisions with perks, unit choices etc. and finishing on bronze all the time because I was trying to clear everything out on the maps first. So I started over, and have finished with gold every map so far (only like 5 at the moment), sold a bunch of troops I don't need, etc. Is it just me, or do rangers just fucking own? I figure that eventually my force will consist of however many heroes I'm forced to put out (3 right now), a ballista just so I can shoot the shit out of flying stuff, an eagle or two, a heavy infantry or two/three (probably mostly the halberd guys), and then all the rest rangers. Currently I have 6 rangers, and would take as many more as I could get honestly. I'd rather have them than cavalry, archers, etc.. I pick poison weapons so even if they run away and I don't want to expose myself to get near them and prevent healing, they have nothing to heal. Then I pick eagle eye, so they can see further and see invis. Then ford seekers so they can move freely over water. Currently next I pick cause fear just because forcing a unit to flee makes taking objectives pretty fast if I need it. I haven't gotten to the ranger lords or whatever the last level is, but I can only imagine they'll be even better. They are naturally invisible, segmented movement for huge distances, and usually never get attacked back unless fighting another skirmisher. And it seems to me as if the game is broken because any time someone attacks a skirmishing unit, they first get their skirmish attack, then respond with normal melee. So often times something will attack me and I'll kill like 12 out of the 15 units that attacked me and take only a couple of points in return. It really seems like there is no downside to having mostly rangers, other than flying units which the eagles and ballista take care of. Even massive rock trolls and heroes and shit are easy if you can simply run up and take a point or two off with no retaliation, then retreat a couple of spaces. They move further than cavalry, don't have to worry about that stupid impetuous trait, can ford rivers (usually the downfall of any assault), don't leave any wounded behind to be healed back up, see invisible, etc. Maybe later on I'll find that I am supremely gimping myself, but so far it really doesn't seem like it. The only reason I keep a couple of heavy infantry around is that I figure at some point I'm going to have to hold something valuable, and I don't want my hero being the only one that can. Anyone else playing and have any thoughts? |

+12 Internets | But it does have its own thread http://www.fohguild.org/forums/other...t=Fantasy+wars and later on you going to need anti Cavalry cause those mounted orcs will rape your rangers.

| Vampire... someone mentioned the bugs. There are several player-made patches out there that are technically "mods", but are there just to fix bugs and storyline. Some argue it changes the storyline too much, but others argue the fixes are worth it. Might check that out. No ones mentioned puzzle quest. By no means is it "traditional", but it's really damn fun and recently made. |
