Saints Row 2

I searched but didn't see a thread. So apparently THQ wants a piece of the pie and making a sequel to be released about 4 months after GTA4. I wonder how will Saints Row 2 stack up to GTA4.

I thought Saints Row was a nice bridge in the wait for the next-gen GTA game. It wasn't great but wasn't terrible either. Looking forward to playing this one once I rape the shit out of Grand Theft Auto.

I played thru saints row. It's great and all, but it's no GTA. Most people would probably say the same. Wouldn't know if it's argueably better (if it was completed) to release that before or after GTA:IV. Before and they'll probably get a more straight review. Afterwards, it's gonna be how this and that is not GTA (assuming GTA is the better game). The plus would be by then, there should be plenty of people who 100% the game and looking for their next 'fix'.

If it's 4 months, I guess they could, 'steal' some ideas. It's a decent game but it's definally after the same core as GTA buyers and given the choice (all hype atm, btw) I can tell you were my 1st dollars gonna go towards tho.

I'd go in the opposite direction. I enjoyed Saint's Row 1 more than any of the GTA games yet.

There's a lot GTA should be "Stealing" from SR to improve itself.
At very least steal combat from it.

I'm really looking forward to SR2 to see if they can progress the genre, cause imho GTA has become stale.

wat?

Some of the mission concepts we're cool, but somehow I find it hard to believe when you get to around level 7 of a drug trafficking mission that you instantly start out with the feds on you. Lets not even talk about the assassination missions which we're functionally retarded.

I didn't like having to continuously earn respect to keep doing missions. How much respect can one guy get. I already took over 2/3rd the town singlehandedly running off two rival gangs but I can't start on the 3rd gang till I earn more respect... horrible mechanic there.

The game felt like a GTA clone that wasn't quite finished. There is potential, but there is a lot of shit they need to clean up too.

The Freckle Bitches ads we're funny.

I'm in the same boat. The character customization and combat really pushed SR past GTA imo. I know in GTA:SA you can work out and become buff but at the end of the day you are still a 6 foot tall black guy.

And I've said it in about every GTA, SR and "Recommend me a 360 game" thread, but I can't accept the "Hold R1 and X until target dies" style combat that GTA still uses. It may be different in GTA4, but I won't judge it until I play it.

SR just stuck with me. I beat GTA3 and can't tell you anything about the story. I know I drove around and completed the sandbox version of "collect 20 bear asses" a few times. Then I raided a dam or something and had to shoot a helicopter with a rocket to make the credits roll. I still remember a lot of the individual missions in SR. The insurance fraud sidequests were a particular favorite. Who doesn't love crashing into a cop car, flying 50 feet and then landing in the back of a pickup truck?

I'm personally looking forward to SR2 more than GTA4 at this point. I have no doubt that GTA4 will have a lot more polish. The problem is that polish doesn't directly translate into fun for me.

Thread Necro +1.

GTA IV has come and gone. It did the trick for some people and it didn't push the bar far enough for others. Well more and more SR2 media is being released and they certainly look like they will fill a niche that GTA has left behind.

Release Date: October 14, 2008.

Story thus far (SR1 spoilers ahoy):
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The protagonist was aboard the boat that blew up at the end of the last mission. He was put into a 15 year coma that left him severely disfigured. Upon waking up he finds that Stilwater has drastically changed thanks to the Saints dissolving and 3 new gangs have moved in to take their place. Julius has tried to put his life of crime behind him. Johnny Gat is awaiting the death sentence for murder.

Pictures!

Vidyas!

Story

Activites (SR2 vs GTA4)

It seems they have certainly stepped the story up a bit. Hopefully they keep the mission variety from the first game going strong. I hope they keep the humor from the first one as well. Your character only talked 4 times the entire game but 3 of those 4 lines were gold.

Johnny Gat: I'm gonna skull-fuck that bitch.
Protagonist: ...Hope you don't mind hepatitis

Thread Necro +2:

Saints Row 2 releases next Tuesday. I can't believe there isn't more talk about it. But I'm only bumping the thread because IGN released a track list for the in-game radio stations. Apparently there will be hidden songs scattered throughout the game but here is what you start with. I love the track list on the metal station but I'm a little disappointed with the hip-hop station. I refuse to listen to anybody named "Young Jeezy." I'm also kind of confused by the amount of songs on each station. The modern rock station has 14 songs while the easy listening station has 24? Who the fuck listens to "Tooba Boogie" while shooting rockets at people?

I'd spend most my time listening to "The Mix" so...I'm sure someone will listen to "EzzY' well shooting rockets

Looking forward to this more than just about anything right now, GTA4 was a huge disappointment for me, they did almost nothing to push the genre forward.

Like 5 hours into this now.

First off, I love the way it starts, it just throws you right into the thick of things without a lot of build-up(I like games that "hook" you in the first couple minutes).

I bought the collectors edition without really knowing what was included and was kinda surprised at how nice it is, really nice large tin case, comes with a 512mb USB thumb-drive in the shape of a bullet, and a Saints Row 2 Money Clip(which I think is best extra ever).

I'm kinda disappointed by character customization, I couldn't make the same exact character I had in SR1...but that's mostly cause they don't have a hair "height" slider this time. But they added a lot of new features to make it super customizable, just coincidental they removed something very specific to what I made before.

Over-all I'm loving the game so far, 5 hours in isn't a lot but if you liked SR1 this is better, and SR1 was pretty good.

So, the PC release date was supposed to be yesterday except THQ apparently just decided not to ship it without any word whatsoever. Retailers are saying 11/10 now which is pretty damn retarded imo. Why release it so close to GTA IV? Even if SR2 is a better game, they'll still get crushed. A month earlier would have been more than enough time to get people to buy the game while waiting for GTA, but a week? Good luck with that.

I finally got a chance to play this yesterday.

The character creation tool is insane. I spent like 20 minutes tweaking my character and no matter what I changed, I couldn't make a fugly Oblivion style mess. My only complaint is that the voices kind of suck. You either have to pick a Brittish guy, a black guy or a mexican. Yet another instance of white American males getting held down.

The controls haven't changed a bit so that is a huge relief. Cruise control is the greatest feature ever put into a sandbox game. It makes drive-bys so much easier. They took away the running melee attacks so that kind of sucks but I don't do much close combat fighting anyway so it's not that big of a deal for me. Using people as human shields and then throwing them through a wall/executing them is so awesome.

I have about 4 hours of game time and I've done just about 2 missions after the prologue. The rest of my time has been spent loading up my garage with cars and running activities. Fuzz is so much fun. I also played the bodyguard one which was also badass. Getting people in chokeholds and then throwing them into helicopter blades is the best thing ever.

There have been some freezing complaints but I haven't run into one. If you were just a little disappointed with GTAIV and want a sandbox game that doesn't revolve around man dates, you owe it to yourself to pick up SR2.

I've had it freeze once(PS3 version), but after 25hrs of play it's only happened once.

Since the game auto-saves very often anyways it's not much of a loss if it does happen, seems more of a fluke than a common occurance.

I've played through all the Ronin missions and it was pretty fun...though it seems like the story message got mixed up. Most of Saints Row is over-the-top gangsta style that doesn't take itself very seriously(which is good, GTA4 took itself way too seriously). Then there's just some moments that get really serious and (almost)shockingly brutal for a few moments. Kinda throws you out of your suspension.

If anyone gets the PS3 version let me know, I'm kind of interested in trying out the co-op stuff. From what I've read it seems like you can basically connect to friends and all player your own single player games(or team up), kind of like a mini-MMO.

Not sure if that's how it really plays out, which is why I want to try it.

Seems like the business "wisdom" these days is that a PC release is more of a courtesy than a sales tool. Don't do concurrent PC releases or the potential pirating will cannabalize console sales, so I doubt they care much about PC sales compared to GTA since 95% of their sales will be 360/PS3 anyways.

I was surprised there was a PC version at all, since the first one didn't get ported. What pissed me off is that they said all along that the PC version was coming out the same day and then ... nothing. No announcement or anything, it just didn't ship. I was bored enough this week that I went out to buy it without downloading first (last time I did that was uhhh... Dreamfall in 2006?) only to find it had just magically disappeared from the release list.
