PS3 - Unsupported data type

Anyone out there thats tried to stream some media from a server to PS3 getting this error and know a work around? I've got some torrented tv shows etc, most of which play perfectly, but the odd one I get the "Unsupported data type" error.

I've tried using video converters to every conceivable media format but nothing seems to be working. I've enabled the WMA playback option and all that and still nothing. I've looked through quite a few threads on other sites but there doesnt seem to be any definitive answers.

Does the ps3 require certain bitrates/aspect ratios/etc? Any converter utilities or links to workarounds that'd get this working would be appreciated.

TVersity is probably the best one and easiest one to use. Must have a computer and a network. Obviously.

Is your PS3 updated to the latest version? I know I've had similar issues which were then fixed after updating.

Yea I'm updated to the latest firmware. And I gave tversity a try on my main machine but it was acting up. Maybe I'll have to install it on my spare (see cleaner) machine and see if it works that way.

Right now I'm just using Mindows Media Player 11 cause it was just the easiest solution at the time. If its the cause of my problems maybe not the best solution hehe.

Not related to streaming, but you can use PS3 Video 9 - PlayStation 3 Video Converter to convert video file to play direct on PS3. Worked on every video file I tried.

Awesome thanks, if it comes down to it I guess i can just toss them on the machine's hd. But still gonna try getting this streaming stuff working as well.

Edit: Program says it should work for streaming as well. Will update when this file finishes whether it works or not.

How good does that stuff look with the PS3 upscaling, or is it basically the same as streaming it straight to the TV?

I'd say it looks pretty damn good considering. You've still got a bit of the blocky compression thing but you usually have that on the monitor as well. It looks almost as good as on my 22" lcd monitor.
