To pick 3 that you heathens haven't yet...

Star Control 2, Wing Commander 1-3. Jedi Knight trilogy was pretty decent too.

Completely agree. I haven't hated a villian as much as him since then - for a SNES game that is pretty remarkable. The narrative made you want to hate him with a passion and when you think you could stop him, he kills more people and mocks you. It is genius.

"I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate you!" - Kefka, referring to Celes

As for Hatorade's comment on FF7 bashing being the it thing to do, you gotta keep in mind that the SNES (and other systems before 97) had a huge library of RPG games that were quality stuff and for discussion about their narratives/stories only, its hard for FF7 to stand up to that - even if it was cool as shit when it came out.

Without really giving any justification...

FFVI
Bioshock
HL2 series
Killer 7
God of War 1 (story was very MEH in 2)

Probably more.

Baiten Kaitos 1/2 is my favorite all time RPG story. Followed by BG1/2.

Panzer Dragoon Saga. With Halo at a close second.

Kind of a toss up for me between FF:Tactics and FF VII.

KotOR and Chrono Trigger with honorable mentions though. Bioshock was another good one.

Anyways Bashing FF VII story line is just the cool thing to do now. Nothing at the time was cooler. Between the Barret side story to the revalation that was Zack. In retro spec yes we all know the lame parts but again at the time nothing was so bad ass in a RPG ever. The Cid rocket town story was intense and Nanaki's father side story was moving.

Fuck the haters.
Nah. I've been bashing FF7 ever since 1997, or whenever it came out. My hater credentials are solid. No bandwagon here.

And I disagree wholeheartedly with the "nothing at the time was cooler" appraisal of FF7's storyline. Plenty of stuff at the time was a lot cooler. FFT's storyline, for instance. And the storyline of Xenogears, which followed very shortly thereafter. The intricacies of FFT's and Xenogears' storylines were 10000 times more complex and intriguing than "ZOMG the hippie brunette homeless girl just bit it!"

Also, Chrono Trigger. That game rocked. That game's story rocked. Frog and Magus rocked. So much rockin' was contained in that game that you'd better not come a knockin'!

Only 2 KOTOR mentions? That was an excellent story, and the twist literally made my jaw drop. I've never, ever given 2 shits about a story in a game, but KOTOR I absolutely loved.

Agreed. MGS was pretty deep and thorough. I liked how MGS1 & 2 talked about how information is passed down generations. It was very involved.

I loved both KOTOR games, but I found the "twists" rather contrived and obvious. I loved the games for their gameplay; not so much for their stories.

Jait speaks the motherfucking truth. Star Control 2 specifically.

Oh, Portal & FF8 too. 8's storyline is waaay under rated by haters. I don't get the hate. Just because of junctions? Get over it.

No one has mentioned RTS yet?

For that, I nominate Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne as well as Starcraft

What about an MMO storyline?

The saga that was FoH and LoS and their respective leaders' site updates as well as the constant drama and flame wars was enough to earn Everquest a nomination. You just can't write gold like that.
