Buying a PS3

I wanna get a ps3 and I found a 60GB one on amazon for 450. Is the 60GB one fully backwards compatable? Because I have PS2 games I would like to play on it also and was wondering if I should shell out the extra 50 bucks + tax on the 80GB (if its BC) one since it comes with Motorstorm also.

The guy I can get it from amazon isnt charging tax but is charging 9 bucks for shipping so it sounds like a good deal to me.

Yes, the 60 gb is fully backwards compatible and is better in bc than the 80 gb as the 80 gb does not have the ee from the ps2 in it while the 60gb has all the components from the ps2. So the 80 gb is backwards compatible but not as much as the 60 gb.

It's not fully but has an incredibly high compatibility rate. I can think of one game offhand which won't install. The Vana'diel Collection 08 for FFXI.

Seeing how there is no Vana'diel Collection 08?

Why is he charging shipping? Amazon has free shipping for most everything over $25 (everything as far as I know).

Far as I know the 80 BC is hit or miss, Sony said that they'd try to address that in a firmware update later. The issue is they're going to be using software emulation, they took the actual ps2 chip out, so they have to write an emulator. I realize Sony has an inside track on this but people have been working on ps2 emulators for years with limited success, so I wouldn't hold your breath. Especially since, when it comes to a software emulator, a lot of games need special fixes and there is no way they'll get around to doing one for every game. I'm sure there is a compatible/not compatible list around. Should google it and see if the games you have are compatible, then decide.

The 60gb still have the actual ps2 chip inside and hence are BC, except apparently for Vinen's FFXI collection.

The 80's are not entirely software emulation. As far as I know they have one of the 2 chips required for full hardware emulation. I believe they have the PS2 graphics chip but not the CPU which is whats being emulated. The 60gb of course has both chips and should be 100% bc. The 80gb is mostly compatible but you might want to bookmark PlayStation.com - Support - PLAYSTATION®3 Backward Compatibility Status and make sure the games you want to play dont show any issues. For what it's worth I have a 60gb an I love it.

If by love it you mean it sits there while you play your other consoles, then ya I agree.

I bought a PS3 80 for a friend as a gift and eventually HAD to return it and buy a used 60gig.

I have a PS2 lib of close to 1000 so when he started borrowing games often he ran into issues with the 80gig more then is acceptable. Its especially bad for many of the small niche RPGs I own, though even the 60gig had issues with them(wheres in the 60 the saves would randomly corrupt, in the 80 it just wouldn't let you save, refused to recognize virtual memory cards).

If PS2/PS1 play is a priority then the original models is the only solution.

By fully compatible these people mean NOT fully compatible.

Over time, they will become less compatible with new PS2 releases (why you would buy a new PS2 game when you own PS3 I don't know).

Anywho.. buy the 80 GB version and trade in the crap game that is motorstorm and use the $10 trade-in credit towards Madden '08
