Do you ever overanticipate a game and have it fall way short of your expectations?

I just got back from plopping down a cold $25 interest-free loan to EBStop on my Rock Band bundle, and I started thinking about all the great games in the past 20 years that I've hyped into the stratosphere.

The most recent example I can think of would be Super Paper Mario. I firmly believed this would be an 11/10 game, but I only put a few hours into the game.

I don't think this will happen with Rock Band because, let's face it, it's destined to be the GOTY.

I've started to not even look at game media for any titles I have interest in, just to have a fresh experience when the game ships. I did this with TP, and I found the game to be quite enjoyable. Likewise, I'm also ignoring Galaxy and No More Heroes media. It really helps keep my feet on the ground.

The big deal is that SPM is not a bad game, but it's nearly unplayable for me due to unrealistic expectations.

Fable definitely. I mean, I loved Fable, but I expected it to be Oblivion and it just wasn't. Because of that, I really don't try to get up for a game that high anymore. For the record, I've got 125 bucks left on my rock band bundle. This should be interesting.

Hrm, thinking again, yep - I've never done this with games.

Movies however are another story. Fuck you Spider-man 3 and fuck you in the ass Matrix 2 & 3.

I stopped getting overexcited over games after having played so many MMOs.

...you expected Fable to be Oblivion, and you were disappointed when it wasn't?

I understand what you mean. I thought Fable was going to be fucking kick ass 300 hours of gaming awesomeness but it was just a really good RPG in the end, and only took 15~ hours to beat.

I'm going to say Vanguard, at least until I started beta testing it. I thought this game was going to be massive ownage, like a lot of people did, but when I started beta testing it it was just WoW with shitty performance and a sort of nifty combat system. Well, we all know how it turned out. I guess this doesn't really match your initial example of SPM, since Vanguard ended up tanking while that game was very good.

A prime example for me would be Halo. After all the boner popping it induced I decided to get an Xbox and try it out. Just seemed like a really good FPS to me that for some reason exploded into stardom.

Only one that comes to mind at the moment for me is Ace Combat Zero. Four was one of the best games on the PS2. Five had decent missions and length but the presentation fell short compared to Four. Then here comes Zero, a short game that had a really shitty plot presentation. The whole game was done as a series of interviews from people you shot down that were done years after the events of the game. They hyped branching plot paths but you still reach the same conclusion and also the branching missions were not very good.

I'm not too concerned about Six though, it looks like it will at least be comparable to Five.

Don't be a fuckwit fanboy and whore up messageboards hyping/discussing games that aren't on the shelves. When they hit the fucking shelves, check the reviews, and decide from there.

You'll never have this problem again. Actually, I'd go so far as to say your gaming experience will be much better. I found myself saying 'Damn, this is an awesome game' so much more on games I absolutely heard nothing about. If I read every dev post and watched 60 different previews about every cool feauture being implemented in a game, the wow/surprise factor is nowhere near as good.

Was pretty psyched for Doom 3, but that disappointment also did me justice by sabotaging my dreams for Quake 4. I didn't like FF7 after the other couple, but once again, think that was a "jesus it's taking fucking forever" sort of thing.

On the flip side, I only started looking at TF2 a couple weeks before beta and I've been blown away by it.
