| Enemy Territory : Quake Wars I picked this up at my local EB store yesterday. So far all I can say is that they have definitely optimised the performance of the final game over the demo. Very fast paced and the maps are awesome, Slipgate map is the bomb. Unfortunately not many people have picked up the game yet in Australia so its hard to find a populated server at times. Its a great game but it looks like its been overshadowed by Team Fortress 2, which is shit load of fun aswell. |

+24 Internets | The lack of persistent rewards means that if you wish to enjoy the rewards from playing you need to play campaigns form the start, and not only that set aside a good couple hours depending on the maps and how quickly objectives are solved, and then once you get the good stuff lose it all at the end of the campaign. The idea behind this is so that new players don't have to go up against fully unlocked players under the assumption that it would be just to hard, this is arguable, since it worked fine in BF2/2142 without issue and you could easily play the game with no unlocks VS players with them. The only thing persistent in QW is your rank and awards which do nothing but inflate E-Peen. Further alot of the rewards only gain XP from using specific weapons, like the light arms, and this is going to encourage people to run around tossing nades or using pistols and not helping their team as much as they could just so they can get akimbo's for 5 min. That I think is the most negative factor of it all and the one that will irritate me most in campaigns when you really want to win to optimize XP. The game itself is fun,and the maps are incredible, as are the graphics and performance. I think full time UAV is sorta retarded, even if you can destroy it it takes little time to produce a new one, it takes alot of skill away from classes, specifically sniper since you just have to look in the direction of red arrows and find people to shoot, and makes it rather easy to keep tabs on your peripheral and behind. I gave a bit of a lengthy review in the other thread, and I do like the game, I just don't think it will have the kind of population and longevity it might deserve when you need to put aside large chunks of time to get the full experience out of it. FPSes have always been about the fact that you can log in and frag it up for 15 minutes and have fun,or 8 hours. If you have 8 hours great this game is rad, if you don't and are looking for more short term entertainment then some of the other ones currently out, specifically TF2 are a better investment. With persistent rewards this wouldn't have been an issue, and in the end if you don't care about rank you can always play on the unranked servers that save XP which is likely what I'll end up doing, unless I can play for large periods of time. I own both QW and TF2 and I have been playing TF2 more, since I'll sit down with the intention of maybe playing a quick round then doing something else, and even though I end up playing much longer I won't switch to QW. But I am hesitant to sit down and dedicate time to an FPS because often I have those days where I go in and just play like shit and get frustrated, and accomplish nothing. I dunno, I think the lack of persisten t rewards is shooting itself in the foot, specifically the ranked community, The whole reason people played ranked servers in BF was to unlock rewards, only a handful cared about the stats tracking, if people want rewards over stats, they'll play unranked, and that'll hurt the effort put into the ranked stats tracking and ultimately the population of the game since the stat whores won't have the kind of numbers they want to track against, and all the people that want the rewards will play unranked and reap the benefit of rewards in addition to cheaper servers which will also hurt the games long term revenue due to not having as many licensed servers. That's just my prediction , ID could just fuck that by releasing patches that prevent that sort of thing but that could just cause people to quit. |
