In a surprise demonstration during Steve Job’s keynote at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference today, John Carmack unveiled id’s latest revolution in game engine technology with the very first showing of id Tech 5™ running live on the Mac with OS X.

The ground breaking technology unveiled today will power id's new internally developed game and will be available for licensing to third parties. The new id rendering technology practically eliminates the texture memory constraints typically placed on artists and designers and allows for the unique customization of the entire game world at the pixel level, delivering virtually unlimited visual fidelity. Combined with a powerful new suite of tools designed to specifically facilitate and accelerate this content creation process, id Tech 5™ will power games that contain vast outdoor landscapes that are completely unique to the horizon, yet have indoor environments with unprecedented artistic detail.
Looks like EA is also adding Mac versions to their line-up as well

Redwood Shores , Calif. , – June 11, 2007 – Electronic Arts Inc., (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced a commitment to bring its portfolio of hit games to Mac OS X. The first EA Mac titles slated to ship this summer include the wizarding adventure Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix™, racing sensation Need for Speed™ Carbon , military action thriller Battlefield 2142 and the real-time strategy hit Command &Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars™ . Being the first Mac OS X games published by EA, these blockbuster titles are being ported to take advantage of the Mac's performance to run with stunning visuals and signature gameplay at blistering speeds. Later this year, EA will ship Madden NFL 08 and Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 08 in sync with their worldwide launches...

The video isn't available yet, as it just happened a few hours ago. I will add a link to it, when it becomes available!

So, I guess the next wave of game consoles will be based on this tech?

Are these supposed to be pics of it in action? ...

Taken from here.

The last three look pretty good, although I wasn't too impressed with the first. Guess it'll depend on what it actually looks like in motion.

Those would be them...

I think the end result may be a user-interactive environment at the pixel level (that's a guess!)

Id mentioned that they have more sekret sauce coming out later this year at the Quakecon.

Developers: Stop using a brown palette to demo your engines, please.

Crysis looks way more impressive IMO. That new tech demo still has the same plastic feel Q4/D3 have.

i have to see it in motion.

that said IF he has gotten the bottleneck of high end graphics licked....this tech could take off.

biggest problem with the eq2 client at release- graphics killed the fps of the game on higher settings- changing the graphics level=fps increase=better performance

biggest problem with vanguard "client" at release- graphics killed the fps of the game at release. lower graphics level=fps increase=better performance
biggest problem with (insert high end pc game) on any main stream computer,,,,graphical performance killing the fps of the game at higher graphics settings...

if the tech does "fix" this problem...it's going to be interesting to see what sort of games uses this tech.

decent Video of the Tech 5 demo

YouTube - John Carmack demonstrates ID Tech 5 at WWDC 2007

Looks pretty good for the "10 day" claim. Does that include everything?

If they really only spent 10 days creating the artwork for that demo, you can call me impressed. Video quality was crap, and so you couldn't see really well, but I think the Quake 5 engine Will work out pretty well.

If nothing it gives developers a decent choice, and doesn't force them all to use the Half-Life or Unreal (or Crysis) engines.
