| Ultima Online, or the game that won't leave me in peace So I'm sitting here battling insomnia, and I've decided it's a Good Idea to reinstall UO and hop on to a freshly recreated server (just went up this weekend). I'm sitting here twobox macroing my thief up (GM Snooping is good for something, yeah?) and a bard to finagle enough cash outta Destard to hit a hot housing location before it's too late. What is wrong with me. Why can't I quit this game for good? |

I was so disappointed when I learned I couldn't play a dedicated crafter in WoW, or have housing for that matter. Fuck! UO still is the only game I've played where I actually feel comfortable RPing.

seriously. can anyone tell me the reason why world of warcraft is massively multiplayer? there is absolutely no reason or gameplay mechanic that exists in world of warcraft that warrants massively multiplayer online. it would've been fine as a neverwinter nights type game where you and 24 friends (39 previously) gather and fight through dungeons or do battlegrounds. i really don't understand. why is the world even there? no one interacts at all outside of instances. just so you can farm herbs and ore? i don't mean to fag up your thread, but it's retarded what the term mmo has become. it should mean massively multiplayer. yea, UO was the only game i roleplayed in, too. i loved my blacksmith.

| Only have to read the other thread in general to know that I am a UO fanboy heh. I always return to UO as well and I never leave disappointed. I always seem to convince myself that these new MMOs coming out are going to be worth the time I invest in them and I always seem to find myself disgusted in the end. Ultima Online is the only MMO I can think of that I didnt end up playing for other people. I force that fucking garbage they call Warcraft down my throat every day because the core of the guild has been together for 7+ years. Id uninstall WoW with a big god damn smile on my face if it wasnt for them. That is not the case with UO though. I have always played it for me, and the good folks I meet/know are just bonus. I love the fact that I can come home from work and log in, and do whatever I want too without feeling like I am wasting my time. If I want to spend a night taming Cu Sidhe's to try and get a rare color I can do that. If I want to craft then I can fill some BOD orders and make money/get special hammers and shit. If I want "uber lootz" then I can go do peerless encounters. If I want more "raid" type shit then I can do champion spawns with a bunch of other people. If I want real excitment I can do champion spawns in felucca where you have to deal with PKs and thiefs on top of the mobs. If I want a challenge I can go PVP in felucca. When I have had a bad day at work and want to take it out on innocent people I can log on my red toon and fuck shit up. If I want to get with a small group and do some rough shit I can go do the fathers in Doom... or try and solo that shit on my bard which is fucking fun btw.. :P I can do all of that... or none of it and still have fun. What do most high end people do in WoW? Farm herbs, and raid (insert your current raid zone here) every god damn night. I wont even mention pvp in WoW because I have a hard time calling it that and keeping a straight face. WTB a game with pvp that isnt gay please. Also WTB a game that cans the instanced battlegrounds shit and sticks to meaningful open world pvp. Im thinking about just saying the hell with the whole genre for awhile though. The next 8 months are going to be orgasmic if you own a xbox 360. It feels like a perfect time to retire till some new blood reaches the genre.... and hopefully one of the upcoming MMOs isnt pure shit. Dont think I can take another Vanguard, and I damn sure cant take anymore WoW. Jesus this ended up being longer then I wanted.... time for bed, later ![]() |

| Haha, It's been so long since I quit WoW that I forgot there's a general MMO forum on FoH. Just been fuckin' around on Other Games and SS. Hope no one minds this thread being here, =) Great post, LR. That exemplifies why I'm sure my UO love isn't clouded by nostalgia. For the record, my main profession towards the end of my career on OSI was thief, which got slaughtered with insurance or some such crap. The last server (non-OSI) I was playing on, my friend and I managed to pull a heist on a guild tower on 3 separate occasions before they finally put all of their shit behind walls of tables. Good times. |

| Wanted to comment on thiefs... Being a thief now a days in UO takes a true master. I dont remember his name but a thief on I believe napa valley does a little blog/comic thing. With the introduction of ninjitsu awhile back thiefs now can do some interesting shit. You obviously cant rob people blind but there are somethings like power scrolls that can be stolen and can be worth millions. Also they added these new scrolls that grant increase skill gain for short durations. Like if you find a magery scroll and consume it for 15 minutes or whatever your magery goes up faster. Anyway, those sell for a shit ton too and are also stealable. One of his more memorable stories had my impressed. He was following around this tamer/mage for awhile while he killed some paragon (super elite mobs) stuff trying to get some of these scrolls. So Bob (as ill call him now) is hidden and in dog form I think which adds run speed and a stealth bonus I believe. He keeps checking this guys bag while he hunts hoping he gets a scroll. After awhile his patience pays off and he sees one pop into this guys bag. He knows he cant beat him though so stealing and running will prob = death. So he waits for him to recall and uses this new ninja shadow step ability and warps onto the guy while hidden just as he recalls and swipes the item. Tamer/mage guy recalls out and has no clue that he just lost the item. Bob goes and sells it and makes a mint. To give a idea how successful he is. You can buy something called "Blessed Deeds" which will bless your item. Makes it so you dont drop ti when you die, its like insurance but you dont lose money each death. They cost something stupid like 30million gold or some shit. Bob has blessed pretty much everything he owns :P Crime does pay. It just takes patience ![]() |

One of the greatest saviors of the game for me before I quit was the introduction of champion spawns coupled with power scrolls, which brought a HUGE influx of trammies to fel, full of precious, precious loot. I would've made off with more scrolls stolen during champion spawns, but dial-up made that too much of a clusterfuck for me. I used to sit right next to the champion hidden with like 50 snooped-open backpacks on my screen watching for a scroll to pop into one of them. ![]()

+5 Internets | UO is one of those games I really wish I got into. I bought it back when it first came out but my piece of shit computer couldn't run it (hah!) That machine was good for Starcraft and that's about it. I've played a Thief/Rogue in just about every MMO I've ever played and it always pissed me off that I could never actually steal anything of importance. It killed me to hear about all the cool shit people were doing in the game that I couldn't see. What are the chances of someone who has never played UO to pick it up and have any fun at all? |

The game is really a work of art. Everything feeds back into the system -- resource gatherers provide materials for crafters -- crafters make shit for everyone (armor, weapons, clothing, furniture, toys). I just got my first house after 3 days. I finally own real estate on moonglow island!
